Can Americorps connect you to other Americorps members in the area or moving to the area at the same time as you? That way, you could live with someone else that at least shares some commonalities. Also, if they're moving to the area, too, they might be able to look at places for the both of you.

Otherwise, a realtor is your best bet; I've found that many subletters or occupants are reluctant to rent out to someone they haven't met. Look for no-fee apartments as apartment fees are usually an extra month's rent.

if you go through a realtor for no-fee places make sure they know that you are absolutely not paying a fee. they sometimes like to do the bait-and-switch thing.

All the college kids want to sublet their apartments for the summer come May and June so you'll be in a good position then. You'll also want to make sure there's an option to renew the lease come September.

Also - I'm assuming your job will be available on the Red Line since you say it's in Somerville/Cambridge. If so, you should pretty much look at all the towns that run through the Red Line (obviously the closer the better).

Craigslist is good, and if you have good communication with your roommates before moving in, you should be okay. It seems like since you're going to have a low income you'll need roommates - right?

Thanks for your reply! Yeah, I am planning on getting roommates. If I sublease for the summer I will definitely need a place I can sign a lease come fall for, I don't know anyone in Boston so I wouldn't be able to move somewhere.

Yeah you'll definitely be starting with a summer sublet, since most leases in Boston begin in September (due to the student population). This is fine but you should be absolutely sure there is an option to renew the lease.

Come to think of it, this might be a good chance to see if your roommates are cool. If they are absolutely miserable at least you technically could get out of it haha

being such a college town, a lot of people move into apartments in Aug/Sep and move out in May and have to stay on their lease and "eat" their last few months rent. I bet if you posted on Craigslist you find people happy to move out early for someone looking to come in in May.

Or, subletsomeones place- take over the last few months of the lease and have a place to stay for the summer while looking for something permanent.

I don't have much advice on apartments, having been out of the apartment scene for a couple of years, but as for adopting cats, Animal Rescue league is a great place (www.arlboston.org). They're in downtown Boston and always have lots of cats to choose from.

If you're interested in Somerville, check out the davis_square community. (Davis Square is a section of Somerville with a subway station, right near the Cambridge line.) We often have apartment and roommate ads. Also, we've got lots of tags, so feel free to click on some of them and explore.
