To the College Students and new transplants from warmer climes

This is the start of Winter. While New England Winters are pretty wimpy compared to Minnesotan Winters, they're still a might bit chilly. I grew up in Michigan and went to college in northern Indiana. As a result I got to see the students from California, Arizona and Florida hit the realization that winter is a hell of a lot colder than it seems ( Read more... )

I'm from Florida, and I wasn't a smurf last year. I am disappointed.

That logic may seem simple to you, but I've met a lot of folks for whom even that simple bit of logic was an impossibility. One of my college roommates was FROM Indiana, but he was so used to his Mother telling him which coat to wear he was incapable of picking one for himself, even when he KNEW what the weather report would be.

Wow. Garbage spam? SWEET.

"While New England Winters are pretty whimpy compared to Minnesotan Winters"
First ... wimpy is spelled wrong.

Second - New England winters have a lot more snow than most of Minnesota ...

Maine specifically has areas that see upwards of twice as much snow as Minnesota ... and winters tend to last longer.

Silk long johns? WTF? fail.

Oh, I grew up with cotton as well. My wife introduced me to silk long johns. It keeps you just as warm, but has the advantage of being far less bulky. It also breaths well. EMS and REI carry them in mens' and womens' sizes.

Being from Buffalo, I'm amused by this. I'm also amused by my friend from Tennessee who just moved to Boston and has been freezing since about... mid-October, I think, even while wearing long johns.

I moved to Boston from Minnesota at the end of July. People kept saying "haha I bet you're not used to summer!"

Um, we have summer in Minnesota. It can be pretty brutal. Not quite as humid as a Boston summer, but still brutal. WE HAVE FOUR SEASONS.
