Summary: For the last ten years, Theo has loved Lindsay. For the last three years, Lindsay has been a bit of a prisoner in her own life. For two people who were supposed to have it all, life sure turned out to be cruel. Caught up in life and all the dismay it sometimes brings can be challenging, even more so when the person you love is slowly slipping away.

Chapter Six

Living in reality was difficult enough, watching Lindsay slip in and out of yet another delusion had Theo exhausted. She had lasted three days before her next one rolled along, this time she had began showing a few little signs right away. They had been grocery shopping, something Lindsay loved to do. Her claim was that Theo never bought anything good and if it were up to him, they would live off of packaged mac and cheese. Theo wouldn't argue, she was probably right. As long as Lindsay did the shopping, Theo could manage to keep them alive with his cooking abilities. About half way through this trip, Lindsay had seemed off, like she wasn't fully aware of where she was.

While picking up a bag of rice, she had asked Theo when prices had changed to American dollars. Considering they were in New York, everything was American, a sign she wasn't fully in reality. As they went from aisle to aisle, Lindsay made less and less sense.

Gently squeezing Lindsay's arm, Theo pulled her to the side of an aisle, frowning slightly. “Lindsay, what is the name of the store we're in?”

“You're a strange man.” Lindsay chuckled, patting the side of his face. “Theo, we've been coming to the same Tesco for the last how many years? You think you'd remember where you were.” she laughed, walking a few feet ahead of him gazing around.

No matter what he said or did, nothing seemed to shake Lindsay from this false reality. Finally, on the fourth day of her delusion, she began to come around. When she did snap out of it, they were grabbing their jackets and heading for Dr. Roberts office for Lindsay's appointment. Things had transitioned so quickly, Theo had hardly noticed them. Helping Lindsay with her jacket, Theo commented on how the weather was finally starting to warm up when Lindsay replied that New York was finally getting their spring.

Not two minutes before that she had been asking him if his mother would be joining them for lunch again. The human mind was a scary thing, even scarier when it could manage to con a woman into thinking she was living another life.

Being Dr. Roberts last patients of the day meant Lindsay could keep the man much longer than he had intended to stay, or she could be the cause of him going home early. Walking into the main office, Lindsay smiled and gave the receptionist a small wave. Shrugging off her jacket, she quickly undid her scarf and took a seat in the corner of the waiting area. Ridding himself of his jacket, Theo took the chair next to Lindsay, his fingers automatically finding hers and lacing around them.

On their venture to the office, she had seemed fine. Theo had watched her carefully, waiting for any tiny sign that she may have slipped back into a delusion, but there were none. The woman he had left home with and the woman currently sitting next to him were the Lindsay he had always known. Staring at her phone screen, Lindsay smiled and giggled, holding it up for Theo to see a photo that Anna had sent. Lindsay nudged his side, urging him to take a better look at the cartoon panda.

Sometimes the smallest things amused Lindsay, she always found the enjoyment in the silliest things. Theo had long ago added that to his list of reasons he admired and loved her so much. Small talk between the two happened easily, it always had, a comfortable ease seemed to sweep over the pair as they waited. Fingers still intertwined, Theo kissed the back of Lindsay's hand as they sat chatting about this, that, and nothing really.

If a couple could manage to find even the smallest, silliest things to talk about, and do it with ease then there would always be a spark between them. Lindsay's grandmother had told her that one time. At the time Lindsay was only a little girl and never really understood it, but the older she got the more sense it seemed to make. Theo was giving her new details about press that he had to do, when he left in a few weeks, when Dr. Roberts appeared in the waiting room.

“We can finish this later.” Lindsay smiled, before quickly turning her attention back to Dr. Roberts. “Dr. Roberts, hi.”

Theo gave the other man a quick nod.

“Lindsay, Theo.” Dr Roberts greeted them with a small smile. “Are you ready, Lindsay?”

“Uh, I guess.” Lindsay nodded, handing Theo her jacket and smiling a little as she followed Dr. Roberts into his office.

The office looked as it always did, today the blinds were opened allowing the sunlight to filter in and brighten the room. Lindsay liked the feel the sunshine was giving the otherwise dark and comfortable room. It opened it up, made things seem friendlier.

“How has your week been?” Dr. Roberts asked taking a seat in the large arm chair in the corner of his office.

“I'm crazy, how do you think my week went?” Lindsay chuckled, sitting in the arm chair across from him. Watching Dr. Roberts jot down a few notes, Lindsay sighed and rubbed her hands against the top of her legs. “I'm sorry, but I mean it's true.”

“How was your week, anyway?”

“I thought I was in London, I managed that for a few days. Uh, last week Theo and I had a fight. I don't know why, but I assume it has to do with the fact I am crazy. Typical week for me.” Lindsay confessed with a shrug. “I managed to get a little bit of work done on the screen play I started. Not that it matters, I get a few pages and then it sits for another four months.”

Dr. Roberts nodded, not really saying much. Lindsay was used to this, he would begin by asking her how her week was and depending on her answer he directed the rest of her visit from there. If he was silently taking notes, it was a sign for her to keep going until she stopped or he had a question.

“Have you been to London lately?” Dr Roberts asked glancing at his patient.

“No, but we talked about going in a month or two. We were there around Christmas.” Lindsay answered, picking at her soft pink nail polish that was chipping on her fingers.

“Do you like being over there?”

“I do.” Lindsay nodded. “Theo is happier there, usually. I am a lot happier there. We moved here because of his job but that role is over and I don't see why we have to stay.” she sighed. “See, if I wasn't crazy, we could have easily moved back to London.”

“Why do you say that?” Dr. Roberts questioned.

Lindsay stopped picking at her finger nails, hiding her hands under her legs. “It's simple, Theo is scared to move me that far from home. He thinks if we go back to London and something happens, it won't be safe for me. I never wanted to come back to New York, not permanently. We have a flat in London, I don't see why we can't go back.”

Dr. Roberts made a soft humming noise, asking Lindsay to tell him about the flat she had mentioned. Lindsay explained that it was a modest three bedroom flat, just outside of a rather busy metropolitan area. She and Theo had bought it after two years of seeing one another, they had happily called it home until Theo was asked to move to New York for a role. Not wanting to sell their home, Lindsay had managed to convince a friend to move in; Julian Gottlieb had been renting their flat for almost four years. In that time, Lindsay and Theo had stayed there maybe twenty or thirty times.

Lindsay smiled fondly, telling Dr. Roberts about her other home and how she missed it. How she missed the neighbours, the neighbourhood, and the over all way of life she had there. Something she wasn't likely to get back.

“Have you asked Theo to move back?” came the next question.

“Of course! I suggest it every month, at least once, when Julian sends us his rent. I'm sure if we moved there would be an adjustment period, but in the end I think we'd be okay.” Lindsay revealed.

“What about your family? Your friends, wouldn't you miss them?”

“Anna, yes. I don't have many friends here anymore. Besides, Anna could come visit us. My other friends are in London.” Lindsay answered matter of fact. “As for family I see my sister once a year, my mother hasn't spoken to me in two, and my father is content to send money every month. It doesn't matter to him which country I live in.” she cleared her throat. “Theo's family is more my family these days. Most of them, surprise, are in London far more than they are New York.”

Dr. Roberts continued to take notes, asking Lindsay a simple question here and there. A few of them were about the life she missed in London and a couple were directed towards her family and Theo's. Lindsay didn't mind answering those questions, especially not the ones about Theo's family. They were kind, good natured, and loving people. On the matter of her family, there wasn't much to say that she hadn't already stated in one sentence. Sensing that his patient had said all she was going to, on that subject, Dr. Roberts moved things along.

Picking up his pen once again, he shifted slightly and cleared his throat. “You mentioned a fight, anything you want to touch on there?”

“Aside from the fact I hated my boyfriend for an entire day and have no idea why?” Lindsay laughed a little. “I remember I was on the phone, then Theo and I went for lunch, and I left mad at him. I don't remember why or any of our conversations.”

“Does that worry you, when it happens?”

“Sometimes.” Lindsay nodded. It terrified her. How could she live through an entire day and not remember most of it? On top of that, it had turned her into some kind of horrible bitch and yet Theo still apologized and told her he loved her. What kind of nut job was he?

“Do you ever ask anybody what happened, when you have that take place?”

“I didn't bother, Theo was over it by the time I got home and it didn't seem like we needed to start another fight.” Lindsay replied. “Have you saw The Fault in Our Stars?” Lindsay asked, leaning forward slightly.

“I can't say that I have.” Dr. Roberts shook his head.

“Mmm, anyway, in the movie there is a scene where Shailene's character tells Ansel's that she's a grenade. Of course I am pretty sure it is in reference to the cancer and not knowing when she will die, but I get it.” Lindsay offered.

“How so?”

“I know what it is like, walking around and having no idea when that is going to end.” Lindsay sighed again. “I don't mean end as dying.” she shook her head frantically. “I guess, I know what it's like to be living life and suddenly it stops for one reason or another. For Hazel Grace it was cancer, for me it's delusions. Either way the life you know, it's gone and everybody you know is caught up in it.”

Dr. Roberts didn't comment, he continued writing giving Lindsay a chance to finish any thoughts.

Lindsay laughed, stopping abruptly. “What do ya know, we also spend a lot of time unloading our issues on Ansel.” she glanced at Dr. Roberts who didn't look like he got the joke. “Never mind. So, now what?”

“So.” Dr. Roberts echoed, leaning forward and setting his note bad down by his feet. “Is there anything else you wanted to discuss? Or should I let you go?”

Today's session was fairly quick, not unusual for Lindsay. Some sessions were shorter than others and that was fine. Today, she seemed prepared to discuss what she had, not really wanting or needing to seek deeper input into what had gone on since her last visit.

“I assume you'll want to talk with Theo.” Lindsay added. Dr. Roberts nodded. “Hmm, well, in that case there is one thing. Lately we've been having a few issues, nothing major just petty really, mostly we don't talk about the fact I'm sick. I don't really know what to do.”

“Have you tried talking with him about these issues?”

“Yes.” Lindsay lied a tiny bit. “I miss the way things were, I know he does too and we both know we're never getting that life back. I just want us to be open and connect.”

Furrowing his brow, Dr. Roberts sat tapping his pen to his notebook. After a few seconds of this, he stood up and shuffled to his desk moving this and that around. Lindsay watched as he obviously searched for whatever it was he needed. Quietly sitting in the chair, she gazed out the window, lost in the pale blue sea of white clouds. New York had a nice skyline, like everything else in the city it certainly was busy. The sky may be the only thing peaceful about New York. Lost in her gazing, Lindsay hadn't realized Dr. Roberts had sat back down, until he called her name.

“Oh, I'm sorry.” Lindsay turned to see him. “I was just enjoying the view.”

“It is a rather lovely view.” Dr. Roberts agreed. Changing the subject he held out a card for Lindsay to take. “This is a card for a counsellor, her name is Ruth Michaels.”

“What kind of counselling does she do?” Lindsay asked briefly reading over the card.

“Mostly she deals with groups, although she does take couples. Her background is in mental illness, terminal illness, and relationships. I think she may be of benefit to you.” Dr. Roberts explained.

Lindsay nodded, clutching the card. “Do you mind, maybe, mentioning this to Theo? It might just have some pull with him, if it comes from you.”

“Certainly.” Dr. Roberts agreed, checking his watch. He and Lindsay had been in the office less than an hour. “I think you and I are okay for today. You can always call to make another appointment. I'll let you go, if you wouldn't mind sending Theo in?”

Stepping out of the small office, Lindsay was greeted by Theo who looked like he was about to fall asleep. For a man who spent a good portion of his time waiting in audition rooms, he really did hate sitting around. Lindsay giggled seeing him resting his chin on his hand, his eyes slowly closing further. Taking a step toward him, she nudged his arm and smiled brightly.

“Your turn.” she announced when Theo looked up at her.

“You were quick.” Theo glanced at his watch.

“Not much to say, I guess.” Lindsay shrugged, taking his hand and pulling Theo to his feet. Giving him a kiss on the cheek, she pointed toward the door that she had left open just a crack. “March!”

Now was Lindsay's turn to wait.

Knocking on the door and having Dr. Roberts direct him to enter from the other side, Theo pushed it open and stepped inside the office. Shutting the door behind him, he moved across the room in a few short strides.

“How are you today, Theo?” Dr. Roberts addressed the younger man, directing him to sit in the chair across from him. “Did you catch the fight last night?” he asked in reference to a rather anticipated and highly publicized boxing match

Theo shook his head. “No, I missed it, but I heard it was one hell of a fight.” he chuckled.

“Best one I've saw in ages.” Dr. Roberts laughed. Moving a few things around on his desk, he quickly got down to business of the visit. “Lindsay was telling me that for the last few days, she was caught up in a delusion?”

“She thought she was in London. It stopped as we were getting ready to come here, actually.” Theo informed the doctor with a sigh. “About a week ago, she was caught up in another delusion and when I tried to correct her, we ended in a fight.”

“Ah.” Dr. Roberts nodded. “Lindsay said there was an argument. She wasn't certain, but felt it was part of a delusion. She doesn't remember any of the specific details.” he informed Theo. “It may be something to talk to her about.”

Theo scoffed slightly. “I don't mean any disrespect, but I'm not sure I want to have her mad at me any longer.”

“Understandable.” Dr. Roberts nodded, making a few notes. “Have you ever thought of seeing someone, maybe a counsellor or somebody?”

In all honesty to the question, Theo couldn't say he had ever entertained such an idea.

“Theo,” Dr. Roberts scribbled a few things down on a piece of loose paper. “Lindsay wanted me to mention this to you.” he spoke as he wrote. “There is a colleague of mine, Ruth Michaels and she does counselling for people like you and Lindsay. I'm not sure how you feel about this, but it might not hurt for both of you to talk to somebody about all of this.”

“You're saying you think I need a psychiatrist as well?” Theo asked, shifting uneasily in his chair.

“I am just saying that sometimes, when couples are going through difficult times it doesn't hurt, if they can openly share things with one another.” Dr. Roberts leaned forward, handing Theo the piece of paper.

Taking a quick second to read over the paper, Theo raised his brow. On the note was the name, Ruth Michaels along with a phone number.

“Lindsay knows that she is sick.” Dr. Roberts explained. “She said that the two of you don't discuss that and this may be a way for you to open up and learn how to communicate with one another.”

“Of course it is.” Theo sighed, gazing at the paper in his hand.

Leaning back in his chair, Dr. Roberts eyed Theo for a moment. “You don't have to do this, it isn't a requirement. Merely a suggestion.”

In other words, Dr. Roberts didn't know Lindsay all that well. If he thought this was only a suggestion, then he had no idea that the moment Theo walked out of this room Lindsay would be making an appointment, if she hadn't already.
