Chapter One

Doctor's Offices were always so stuffy. If they weren't one of the most depressing places on earth, then Theo would have totally missed his guess. Sitting in the small, plush waiting room of the private office, he let his eyes wander. On the opposite wall was some random reprint of a painting, by some artist, he had probably never heard of. The soft, low music coming from the speakers attached to the corners or the wall was some classical piece that made a man want to scream in frustration. As many times as he had sat in this very room, he should be used to it. Maybe a person never really got used to things that always brought them such bad news?

Across the room, behind the oak door, sat a neatly decorated room. The dark, warm colours were no doubt there to make it feel comfortable and safe. Instead, Theo had always felt it made the room feel tight and closed off. Tapping his fingers on his knee, he waited for that very door to open and the current occupants of the room to walk out. First the door would open revealing a middle aged man, his dark hair slightly shaggy, and his dark eyes kind. He'd hold the door and smile, allowing the tall, blue eyed blond to pass by.

Theo knew the routine perfectly, because it was the same every time. For the last three, almost four years, each visit to Doctor Dave Roberts was the same. First Dr. Roberts would ask to speak with Lindsay, then after her session, he would drag Theo in and they would discuss a few odds and ends, all tying in to Lindsay. As if on cue, the door knob turned and as Theo had predicted, the middle aged man walked out of the room, allowing for the blond to pass.

Standing from his chair, Theo held his hand out to Lindsay, smiling as she accepted. “I think Dr. Roberts wants to see you.” Lindsay whispered, her smile never faltering.

“Will you be okay to wait?” Theo asked, only letting go of her hand at the last second, when she assured him she would be fine.

“We won't be long, Lindsay.” Dr. Roberts assured from the other side of the room. “I only need him for a moment.”

“I'll be fine, take all the time you need.” Lindsay replied, taking the seat that had formerly been occupied by her boyfriend.

Fully assured that Lindsay would be fine, for a moment or two, Theo followed the other man into the room and gently closed the door behind him. Now was his moment of truth.

“Mr. Taptiklis, good to see you again.” the doctor greeted with an outstretched hand.

“Come on now, Doctor Roberts, I thought you and I were friends. You can call me Theo.” Theo flashed a smile, shaking the doctor's hand.

“Right, you do know why I wanted to talk to you?” the slightly older man shifted in his chair, adjusting his tie.

“I don't suspect it is because you've missed me?” Theo took a seat in one of the chairs, on one side of the large wooden desk.

“No.” Dr. Roberts shook his head. Placing his hands on a folder in front of him, he shuffled a few papers around, his eyes darting upward to Theo. “I have been wanting to talk to you, about Lindsay.”

“Of course you have. I meant to be here at the last appointment, but I was in Tokyo.” Theo excused his absence. “I tried to make it back, but it wasn't possible. Lindsay told me she missed her appointment, I apologize for that as well.”

“No need to apologize.” Dr. Roberts brushed it off. “Although, I do want to change her appointments. I'd like to increase them. Theo, I'm sure you've noticed that there have been changes with Lindsay.” Theo nodded. “When this began, we agreed that you could keep Lindsay at home. For now, I'd like things to stay that way. However, there are some things that need to change.”

“Okay, then what can I do? Just give it to me straight, Dave.” Theo encouraged the doctor.

“I know it is hard for you to hear, but Lindsay is only getting worse. I wanted to talk to you, because I think it's about time you start looking at your options.” Dr. Roberts posture changed. “There are some great facilities for people like her, I think she could really benefit.”

“For people like her.” Theo repeated the phrase, his brow furrowed. “You make it sound as if she is some kind of criminal.”

“I don't mean to make it sound that way.” Dr. Roberts sighed. “Theo, you knew very well that a time may come, when we needed to look into this. If you want what is best for Lindsay, then you need to start thinking about this. In the mean time, if you need support then you know where to find us.”

“How,” Theo paused. “How long?”

“Ideally? A year.” Dr. Roberts replied with a sympathetic look.

Theo nodded in understanding. All along he had known that eventually, it was possible that a time would come when Lindsay wouldn't be stable enough to live a normal life - if the life she had now could be called normal. Hearing what the man across from him was saying still hit like a ton of bricks. How was he going to convince Lindsay that the best place for her, was in some sort of care home surrounded by strangers?

Whenever Theo decided to have this discussion, it would have to be on one of Lindsay's good days. If he tried to talk about such a thing with her on a bad day, then he may as well just shoot himself in the foot and call it even.

“How has she been this past week?” Dr. Roberts asked. He always asked the same questions. It was his way of sorting out what was truth and what was fiction from his discussion with Lindsay.

Theo shrugged and leaned back in his chair. “It hasn't been our best week, but certainly not our worst.” he answered.

Making a few notes, Dr. Roberts looked up again. “Tell me about Spain.”

“Uh, we weren't in Spain.” Theo cleared his throat, based on the doctor's expression, Lindsay had given him a wonderful story. All week Theo had watched her carefully, but she hadn't shown him any signs of delusions. “We have no plans to visit Spain either. Eventually, I'll probably have to go for work, but it won't be for months and Lindsay will not be going.”

“Do you ever think of taking her?” Dr. Roberts inquired.

“As much as I would love to, I think the stress would be too much. On top of that, you know how show business is. I'm Theo James, I have an image and the less the public knows about me, I guess the more I sell.” Theo shrugged it off.

A downside to being in the public eye, was always hiding who you were. As much as the public thought they knew about Theo James, the truth was they knew very little and it was to be kept that way. If word got out that he had a girlfriend, it could hurt his marketability. If word got out that Theo James, movie star, had a girlfriend with more issues than a comic book series then it could ruin his entire existence in Hollywood. Theo hated having to keep Lindsay under wraps, but in hind sight it may be better for her. Lindsay didn't do well with stress, having people constantly watch her would only make things worse.

“Anything else?” Theo asked.

Dr. Roberts continued to jot down a couple of more notes, before returning his attention back to Theo. “Are we still talking about Mary?”

Theo had almost forgotten about Mary. Sometimes, during Lindsay's delusions, she would begin talking about things or people that never existed. Mary had been one of the delusions who had lasted a fairly long time, at least a two month period. Often times, after these subsided Lindsay didn't even remember them. The odd time, she would bring up an event or person, usually asking Theo a question or two before moving away from the topic completely.

“No, but she did have some trouble a few weeks ago. I was out and her friend, her real friend, Anna was coming over. Lindsay forgot who she was and refused to let her in.” Theo explained. “The next day, we were having lunch and she told me Anna never showed up for their outing.”

“Do you ever try to tell her the difference?” Dr. Roberts had never asked this question before. Of course he had never had real reasons to ask Theo anything aside from a few true or false questions.

“Some times, if I catch it quick enough.” Theo gave his answer. He chuckled slightly. “After three years of this, you think I'd be able to pick up on it by now.”

Three years ago, after several months of Lindsay not being herself, it was discovered that she had a form of Unidentified Delusional Disorder. If that wasn't enough, in the last year she seemed to be getting worse. The delusions were becoming more frequent and to top it off, there were days when Lindsay didn't even remember her own name. Not wanting to walk away, when she needed him most, Theo had decided to continue living their life as if nothing had changed. He felt it would be best for Lindsay, if she had something familiar and constant.

“It isn't always that easy.” Dr. Roberts commented. “Lindsay is a rather curious case, she has the delusions but unlike most patients who suffer from such a thing, she doesn't outwardly exhibit signs. Not all the time. The rare person can internalize them, they could be having a delusion while you're carrying on a perfectly normal conversation with them.”

“So, what do I do? Do I just sit back and wait until we can put her in a care facility?” Theo cleared his throat with his question.

“Theo, as horrible as it sounds, you know Lindsay can't live this way forever. She needs constant care, eventually, if this takes over completely, it may not even be safe for her to live at home.” Dr. Roberts reminded him. “Now, I know you have a million questions but we can deal with them later.” he glanced at his watch. “I have to head off and I am sure Lindsay is out there wondering when you two can leave.”

Thanking the doctor, Theo stood from his chair, agreeing to have Lindsay call to make an appointment in two weeks. Opening the door and stepping into the waiting room, Theo was met by Lindsay. Sometimes she could almost read his mind, telling him that she would call as soon as she could to make an appointment. Handing Theo his coat, she had already dressed in hers and was staring intently at her cell phone.

“Anna wants us to go over, but I told her we were just going to go home.” Lindsay explained, linking her arm to Theo's. “Is that okay?”

“Whatever you want, is fine by me.” Theo kissed the top of her head and pulled the door open.

“Maybe we can grab a pizza on the way home? We've been talking about catching up on some tv, why not tonight?” Lindsay smiled, pushing the button for the elevator.

“Or, I could make dinner, you can take a bath, and we'll eat it while binge watching Castle.” Theo laid out his plans, knowing that Lindsay wouldn't want to skip out on her favourite tv show.

Lindsay giggled, stepping onto the elevator, still arm in arm with Theo. “This is why I have kept you around, for ten years, Theodore.” she winked. “I knew when I met you that you'd be worth having around.”

“Do you remember when we met?” Theo asked, casually slipping it in. Sometimes he liked to test Lindsay.

She knew why he did it. Theo, along with so many others thought - knew - she was crazy. Theo would never actually call her crazy, but if the shoe fit then Lindsay was okay to wear it. She, Lindsay V. Decker was crazy.

“Yes.” Lindsay promptly replied. “You were the drunk geek in a pub, I was the exchange student. You asked me if I liked cheese. I thought you were the most awkward and adorable man I had ever met.” she recited the short version of their first meeting. “The next week, you asked me to dinner. I agreed and we've been together ever since.”

“Awkward?” Theo teased, hoping his teasing would hide the relief he felt. Knowing that Lindsay still remembered how they had met gave Theo a little hope. “I am not awkward.”

“And Orlando Bloom isn't drop dead sexy.” Lindsay teased him back, stepping off of the elevator as the doors opened into a lobby.

“That is debatable.” Theo laughed following her off of the elevator and out of the lobby. Outside, New York was slightly chilly in the spring air. Tightening his coat around his body, he wrapped his arm around Lindsay. “Hey, Linds. You know that I love you, right?”

“I know.” Lindsay nodded, walking in step with Theo. “And I know that whatever it is you do to help me, it's because you love me.”
