With a hoist? Kidding, of course. Clever, or just a gamble? Yeah, okay, probably clever because I'm not clever enough to try to write up something more clever.

It's possible that the cabbie could count on his relative anonymity (It's dark, and not many people pay attention to cabbies, :) ) to keep him from any reprisals should such dastardly individuals as Holmes and Watson escape the police and go looking for who tipped them off. :)

That's quite a gamble for Holmes to take. What if the cabbie were noble enough to help a injured man, but not brave enough to want to interfere in the affairs of criminals and murderers?
