I finally had my birthday cupcake today - I've been trying unsuccessfully all week, and today was my last shot if I didn't want to also give Andrew a cupcake, which for multiple reasons is just a bad idea.  It was a delicious cupcake, chocolate with chocolate frosting and a marshmallow filling.  Yum ( Read more... )

I alternately lie to kids or are too honest with them. If we are watching something that's streaming and it takes some time to load, I tell them that's because it's too loud and they need to quiet down if they want it to work. I have ZERO SHAME about this. Nor do I have shame about telling them that, no, we do need the windows open when we come back from gym because otherwise the entire room smells like feet.

Does Andrew like Hi 5? That could add some more variety to the songs!

I do not know Hi 5. On a scale of Barney to Britney Spears, how annoying is it?

Hah. Um, not sure how to answer this because I find a lot of Britney Spears annoying, and I *think* that was meant to be the non-annoying end? I can't stand Barney at all, so I will say much better than that!

Hi-5 was HUGE in Australia and never got as big in the US but it is cute and semi-educational. There are CDs as well as at least the first few seasons on DVD. http://www.amazon.com/Jump-Jive-With-Hi-5-Hi/dp/B0002O06X0

Well, the thing about cleavers is you don't want a *good* cleaver. That is, you don't want a fancy expensive sharp high steel cleaver, you want something heavy and kind of blunt so that the edge lasts while chopping through bones. So I would not buy at Williams-Sonoma, I'd go to a restaurant supply store instead, or if one is not available, something like this online. Spend your Williams-Sonoma money on a chef's knife or the like where the high price really gets you something.

As I've gathered. Actually, I was looking at that exact knife earlier, but some of the comments have me wondering - half of them say "yes, you can chop through bone with this" and the other half say "No, you can't, you will DIE" (or results to that effect).

I live in the middle of nowhere now, sadly: no decent restaurant supply store or even an Asian grocery within an hour's drive. I am very sad by this.

We stopped at Friendly's one night to pick up food we'd ordered for takeout. My nephew knows Friendly's and asked for a shake. We told him they were out of shakes (it was way too late at night for him to have a shake). He was not fooled at all. He just shook his head and was like, "They don't run out. They just make more. Or go to the store."

I loved the Chik-Fil-A story; it reminds me of your mother for some unknown reason. Isn't it funny how kids get so stuck on one eatery? My niece was like that about one specific Hardy's; you couldn't go to any other than the one her mother took her to.
