THAT SAID...when Abrams agreed to direct the film, I think he also took on the responsibility to make it a good film, the best film he could. And in the case of a film that is part of a very storied, very popular franchise, it was his responsibility to educate himself on the things he was filming. Do I think he should have watched every episode of TOS and movies 1-7? Well...no, because that's quite a lot of information to take in in one fell swoop. Even I can't do it.
But it does mean he needs to know when he should ask questions, and when he should go back and look at references. Clearly he watched Space Seed and The Wrath of Khan. But I doubt he saw the episodes with Tribbles, or he'd know why you don't want to ( ... )

Mainly, my reaction was the same - sad because it could have been so much better. I love the people, and I love how they set it up with the new timeline and everything, so then why choose to re-tell one of the same stories? Disappointing. I do hope with the ending of this one and the start of the 5 year mission that now we'll get to some real Star Trek stories.
also, the PRIME DIRECTIVE means you DON'T STOP THE VOLCANO.
Anyway, I have hopes for the next ones, maybe with different writers who don't feel like they have to use a checklist for us to like it.
