Writing & Movies & Chips, oh my!

Jul 01, 2012 06:27

Writing continues to go as the bunnies dictate - which is basically that I'm writing one larger Sherlock story at the moment, and frantically scribbling notes/dialog for several others during the day. I don't remember if I've ever had so many bunnies bite at once - usually I get one bunny who latches on and sticks for weeks/months at a time, until ( Read more... )

I know nothing about police procedurals, and I am pretty much the worst when it comes to fic research so I, alas, cannot help you.

I tend to make lists at the bottom of whatever document I'm working on, sort of a wishlist for where I want to go next. I usually end up doing only half of the things in the list.

And I kind of like the semi-ambiguous subtlety of The Love Notes!

I like the subtlety, too - I think it was the initial spat of comments from people going 'I WANT MORE' that kind of threw me. But then that's always the reaction, isn't it? Even a nicely packaged one-shot, with clear ending and all loose ends tied, and people want more?

I've come to the conclusion that writing police procedure is boring, so I'm trying desperately to ignore it as much as possible, which is hard to do when you're writing about Lestrade pre-Sherlock, because Lestrade has the bad habit of going to work, where people keep getting arrested and interrogated and so far, a lot of the time, people=Sherlock. *sigh*

And I'm trying very hard to not let this go Lestrade/Mycroft, but I found myself typing "Mystrade" by accident this morning, so I think I might be screwed on that score.

People will ALWAYS want more. That means you're doing it right.

I do know the legal implications of what U.S. police do, because I studied con law for many years, but even that is different in the U.K., so I have no idea. I will say this: It can't possibly be more dissimilar to the U.S. system than the U.K. educational system is to the U.S. system. Fixing *that* in the fic I'm working on was a huge pain.

The problem with Mycroft and Lestrade is they go together really nicely. I had no intention of writing Mystrade, then I put them in a scene together and was like, "...Wow. They really...work..."

I'm willing to bet this is why we never see Mycroft and Lestrade in the same scene on the show, because if the writers actually tried it, the two of them would have to excuse themselves and find a room. (I'm recalling a quote from some Buffy episode, no idea which one, "The get-a-roominess-of-them".)

Unless, of course, Mycroft and Lestrade are the SAME PERSON. Now there's a bunny!

The UK educational system I actually have something of a handle on, but only because the O.S. is about teenagers in 1948, right when the whole British educational system was in flux, so I got to read lots of books about how that worked. (And stupidly, put them all in storage, which I'm completely kicking myself about now because one of the books was an American-English dictionary, and omg do I need it now......)

I don't know if you're able for security reasons to give friends your snailmail address, but it probably goes without saying that I have endless access to Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar potato chips and could send you boxes of them. ;)

Awwww! I did figure out that the chips cost me just over $3 for 150g, which is probably more expensive than if I was in the UK, but less than if you were to buy them and then mail them to me - especially because the only snailmail address I have (which I don't mind giving out to folks I know, and you're one of them) is a US APO address. I'm pretty sure you'd spend more than $3 in shipping alone!

Anyway, at $3 a bag, it's not so ridiculous that I'm going to sit here and pine, but not so cheap that I will gorge myself and can thus keep them as a special treat.

But thank you anyway. If I think of something I want desperately from the UK and I can't find it here (so far, pretty lucky), I'll let you know. :)
