I am firmly convinced that the only people who have more than one child were blessed the first time with a low energy, well-behaved angel that TRICKED THEM into believing that a second child was a good idea. And then the second child turned out to be a high energy demon that made them swear off anymore children forever. If you happen to get the high energy child first you are unlikely to ever have another. (Some parents luck out and have a couple of sweet kids and keep going, but they are rare anymore. Or you know, birth control fail.)

Seriously, things calm down around age 2 and you will want to...not go to bed alone again one day.

First, closely spaced kids is the key, secondly I am of the opinion that many of today's kids are overstimulated by so many things that parents are worn to a frazzle keeping up with them.

Lastly, guys rarely stuck around the house during the day and by the time they got home, the wife was so starved for adult interaction that the idea of "lets get a babysitter and go out" was a great excuse and the rest came naturally. How many couples even use a babysitter nowadays?
