If you're using a valid install disk for your machine and disk utility doesn't even see the drive, you need the HDD to be replaced - you don't need a diagnosis on that one - unless it's something like the cable unplugged.
It's a 15" Macbook. I'm pretty sure it was in the first range to be released with the Intel chips. Apart from that, I don't know. All my documentation and details are in Broome on on the computer.
