It's even funnier, of course, for those of us who know how it was done. I have a sneaking suspicion that even Thranduil may have chuckled once he found out - especially when he discovered how wet and uncomfortable the Dwarves got in the process! (That's assuming that Bilbo might have told him, on the ride back from the Lonely Mountain, at least the part about the barrels - I'm sure Gandalf would have warned Bilbo not to say anything to Thranduil about the Ring...)
