Back to Middle-earth Moment

Possibly prodded by celandineb 's comfort movies meme, or by the fact that having FINISHED the Epic Beta Fic the other week I have a bit more space in the bit of my head reserved for LoTR....

I spent a happy few hours last night wallowing in a rewatch of Fellowship of the Ring. Blimey, I haven't watched the EE straight through for years. (I got to the point ( Read more... )

Wow, that's impressive! I only ever racked up once or twice in the cinema... but then, having seen the Extended Edition, it would feel weird now I suspect to go back to the "short"(er) version with even less Lothlorien, and without some of the lovely exchanges between Boromir and Aragorn, and...

There are so many things about Boromir's death that break my heart every time I watch that scene - one which I'd forgotten till last night is the moment when, leaving him dying on his knees, the Uruk-hai scoop up Merry and Pippin and... just stream past him, ignoring him completely. They've got what they want, and it's as though he doesn't matter any more.

And then the expression on his face when that colossal, hideous Uruk chieftain (who towers over Boromir, who we know from the book was a big guy) has the last arrow trained on him, and he knows he's looking at his death, and he just looks straight and steadily back, and is ready.

One of the things which I still, even now, find most galling about RoTK-movie is - how could Jackson, Walsh ( ... )

I saw the others once only, I think.

I thought the troll battle went on too long also, and that stupid crumbling stair scene, ditto.

The thing I liked best, at the time, was I still had access to newsgroups from my work computer & on rassf (?: book SF & fantasy discussions) ... and it was the world's biggest book club meeting. Everyone chose that winter to reread Tolkien & oh, the discussions! Wonderful.

I never really did Usenet, but the discussions on places like the H-A list were and still are one of the great pleasures of the fandom... :-)

Aaagh... now I want to watch them again as well... and I don't have time until Christmas.

(and the one that gets me every single time is Théoden's speech and the charge of the Rohirrim at the Pelennor)

I didn't have time last night except by stealing it from sleep time ;-)

As for Théoden's speech - I still think one of the reasons RoTK disappointed me in the cinema was that they cut together all the best bits of the film to put in the trailer. "Where now the horse and the rider..." - sob, sob.

(Or was that the TTT trailer? Arrgh, far too long since I've watched them...)

Too long for me as well...

And, er, what is this 'sleep' thing? We haven't all finished our epic, you know;-)
