It is so nice to know that sometimes we get it right, isn't it?

[grins] Of course, whenever I remember the following quote from JRRT's Letters I wonder if I'm channelling his writing experience a little too effectively:

This story takes me in charge, and I have already taken three chapters over what was meant to be one! And I have neglected too many other things to do it...

Ooh, I didn't realise you were a HASA member, I'm going to check that out!

My Endless Beta Fic is called "Amid the Powers and Chances of the World", and if your HASA membership is still live then once you're logged in it's here...

Warning #1: the first seven chapters at least suck rocks in terms of writing ability (I started it in 2002 and I do think I've learnt something about writing in that time!)

Warning #2; my gut feeling is that it may bring you out in hives ;-) (but I could be wrong, who am I to make such assumptions!)

You could reactivate it pretty well instantly if you can remember what password you're likely to have used, I should think - if not, then if you fill in the message form at http://www.henneth-annun.net/contact.cfm and choose "Membership/Logins" as the topic I'm sure someone would sort it out for you pretty quickly. But if you can't be bothered just to take a look at one of my endlessly-in-progress fics then I could hardly blame you!

I don't keep Amid the Powers and Chances of the World (known as P&C for short among its very select group of fans!) anywhere else because it's still in beta and it's unfinished - I have finished fic at TFF, publicly on HASA and (drabbles, recently) at LJ, but I can't cope with updating unfinished things in more than one place. HASA Beta is also a great place to work on in-progress stuff with a group of folks I know well ( ... )

That was fun -- I'm all over the place! julifolo July 19 2010, 18:32:57 UTC
"Eldarion's Choosing" is like James Joyce.

For my Ring War AU, if I put in all of Ch. 3, Crossroads to a Trap, I write like Tolkien. If only analyzed the first scene, I write like Stephen King.

In Ch 22, The Time of Gifts, I write like Lovecraft. (Ewww, and I like that chapter.) In Ch 14, The Siege of Minas Tirith, I write like Margaret Mitchell.

In Ch 25, Coronation, I write like Tolkien, also my prolog.

The last scene of Ch 3, Moria, is like Tolkien, but the first conversation (my best multi-person conversation, the whole fellowship participates) is like Stephen King, as is what I have of the Epilog.

If I analyze Ch. 26, The Road North, I write like Shakespeare !!!

From what I remember of doing some beta-ing of bits of it years ago, your Ring War AU prose was very sparse in style - it almost felt sometimes as though you were effectively summarising scenes or dialogue for yourself and would go back and flesh it out later. I can imagine those chapters coming out like Stephen King if what the Analyser is basically looking for is things like sentence length.

Then I remember other chapters being much more epic and sweeping in style...

I suspect if you ever have the time/inclination to go back and smooth over the whole thing, you'd arrive at something much more uniform - perils of writing over such a long period [vbg - you'll notice I only fed it one chapter of Powers and Chances!]

I've gotten several suggestions to "flesh it out" ... & I wouldn't know where to start. Actually, I'd be glad to get my muse back so I could finish the last 20%.

Here, Muse, here, Julie's muse, we have cookies... I'd love to see it finished too! (and would gladly beta again if Muse were to come back...)
