Keep Calm And Carry On

Nov 20, 2008 14:08

The Resident Geek sent me this earlier.  (I can't think why he thought I might need it.)

I  WANT ONE.

(Perhaps this needs to become the new national motto, given that John Sergeant has pulled out of Strictly Come Dancing...)

There is one hanging in the room next to me, to the left of mraltariel's desk.

Is yours that pillar-box shade of red? I am now coveting one for my birthday, but can't help feeling that red is not actually that calming, and hence not terribly conducive to the message being conveyed...

mraltariel finds the bright red cheering. He has Churchill on one side and Davros on the other.

Splendid. It's a very Churchillian sentiment. (I'm not sure it's very Davros!)

It's very cool, Azalais. Very much stiff-upper-lip to this Yank. I find myself coveting one as well! What's impressive is that it doesn't look dated in the least. Until I read the link about the history, I would never have guessed that it was that old.

Now, that's interesting - see, to me, the combination of the crown motif and the font very strongly says early-twentieth-century Britain. 1950s would be about as late as I could have believed it to be. From the '60s onwards you simply couldn't have put out a poster like that as official propaganda, unless you were being ironic - the very idea of a) being that overtly bossy and nannyish and b) invoking the monarchy in support of any political idea would I think have got your campaign laughed out of court ( ... )
