Russell T Davies (who made Casanova, it was his introduction to DT) talks in The Writer's Tale about auditioning all these muscle-bound hunks and then (I paraphrase, coz my copy is at home) "in came this skinny guy who just danced all over the script". RTD's conception of Casanova was of someone who must have been intelligently seductive, funny, fun, not some brainless beefcake, and clearly DT got that too from the off. It's certainly how I remember the show.
Oh, you'd totally love it. He really does dance all over the part - and you get Peter O'Toole playing Casanova at the end of his life, and his dying moments reduced me to a blubbering wreck. A pair of class acts.
