Blessed Samhain...

... or Happy Hallowe'en, to those celebrating either.

(And to those who don't, may you be left free of pestering by unwanted Trick-or-Treaters!)

The Small People both went out with us/friends - First dressed as a devil, complete with horns and red face-paint, and Second as a skeleton - and came back gleefully clutching a small bucketload of sweets ( Read more... )

We had a selection of fairies, ghouls and witches - and they were all very good and sang the traditional Hop-tu-naa songs ( small doggerel ditties which have not changed since I was a child - nor probably my Mum!). I rewarded them with packets of mini smarties.

My back-up jar of half-price Roses remains unopened as the weather suddenly turned nasty!

(PS - you said to poke you if any of us did anything interesting - regard yourself proggled with a small glaive guisarme or similar - I have ficced...)

Likewise as to 'low-key neighbourhood'. My best pair this year were a couple of sequin and satin-clad pirate princesses aged circa 3 and 4... with Mum and Dad hovering in the background. ;)

We had an awful lot of small skeletons and witches. Very few teenagers this year, for some reason!

I rarely get children at my door, but usually do get some of the college students from the Christian college that I live close to. Since the weather is nice, but still a bit cool, I probably won't have more than 20 total people tonight at the most. A really warm day like last year will bring almost 30, a very cold one, ten or so.

I'm intrigued that students from a Christian college would do it - over here, it tends to be the more evangelical wing of the Church that discourages Hallowe'en!

It was a mild, dry night here (Hallowe'en always comes just after we've gone back to Greenwich Mean Time, so it's dark around 5 pm and everyone comes out after that) and we had lots of little ones early, but surprisingly few older ones later on. At 7 pm, just after I brought the Small People home, the Resident Geek sent me out on an emergency sweet run because we were running out - and then we only had 2 more groups! Result, an awful lot of uneaten sweets/chocs which I have had to hide away at the back of the cupboard to fend off temptation...

Oh, the back of the cupboard doesn't work for me, but putting it in a box in the back of my refrigerator seems to work well. Of course, I'm not a chocaholic as some of my friends are. I need chocolate, but not every day :-)

and yes, even though the Christian College is quite strict, the students are kids like all kids are and want to have fun. I'm not sure if they liked my "Goddess Bless" greetings, but they seemed to survive just fine - LOL.

Hee hee! Well, since they were coming out to celebrate Samhain, they were hardly in a position to complain...
