I can't say I do. It obviously depends very much on the situation. And I can't say a lot of people try. If so, there's always the risk that I will try to make a face or look annoyed when someone tries to do so. :) When travelling I'm prone to forgetting to take a picture with me in it because I just don't think of taking one. Even though I agree that it is nice to sometimes have "proof" that you've been there.
It just activates a forward facing camera so you can see yourself on your phone screen when taking a picture of yourself. My older smartphones only ever had outward looking cameras to enable you to take pictures of other people or things. You could TRY to take selfies with those, but it was a lot of guess work!
