I should probably also mention this here: last night there was a round of free advance screenings of Moneyball around the country, and another round is scheduled for next week. Check gofobo.com for free screenings near you, and/or this thread on FW.
Dumb question, but why so many free screenings? Is that the norm for new releases?
I don't remember ever seeing free screenings of anything here, but if they started doing it, Moneyball would be a good candidate. I can't see many people paying to watch it. If they even bring it here.
It's not a dumb question! I think this number of free screenings is the norm for independent/artsy movies that are not thought to have a broad appeal. The idea is to build word of mouth for such films, so that people who might not have thought about seeing it otherwise will go. There are also free screenings for likely blockbusters like Transformers or Fast Five but there are far fewer, since those films tend to have a sizeable ready-made audience.
