Is it fair to say that Disney animated feature film soundtracks have been total lamesauce since 1999's Tarzan*?
*I think we can all acknowledge that Trashin' The Camp is a low point on that OST specifically, and in Phil Collins' career in general, but the rest of the songs save the soundtrack from "total lamesauce" status.
music: random thoughts,
movies: disney

To be fair, ever since Emperor they've stayed away from the whole musical genre. Even the music for Lilo and Stitch was all Elvis based, with no characters actually singing.

I liked Tangled overall much better than TP&TF but I thought the songs for TP&TF were much better than in Tangled. Still, I was far from blown away by either's soundtrack, and it bummed me out yesterday. Maybe this is just yet more proof that I am such an Old Person now.

You are not wrong. However, I feel like that does not give the musical director PTB a pass for lamesaucery.

haha, true!
I do prefer Tangled to The Princess and the Frog, though I did like Facilier's song a lot. And to be honest, when I saw Tangled last November I didn't care too much for the songs- I thought they were forced and lame. Then I watched it again when it was out on DVD, and they grew on me. Now I love it dearly. The reprise of Mother Knows Best as Rapunzel Knows Best is stellar, and I can't lie: I love the goofy pub song!

I concur with you. It's actually more like Beauty and the Beast for me, though I can be persuaded about The Lion King, and I have a soft spot for The Hunchback of Notre Dame because of Tom Hulce. :-P
