I use Final Cut, ImageReady and Photoshop to make them. Which programs did you try?

I tried Fraps to crop the videos and JASC Animation Shop, but the gifs didn't come out right. They looked pretty horrible.

The general thing is that I am a Mac user and know nothing about Windows programs. But I had a look at the description of the JASC Animation Shop and it sounds like it's more for "animated graphics" and not so much for film-clips. It's a difference if you use 5 frames and animate them (like my default user pic) or a clip like my kara/lee gif with 143 single frames. I'm just guessing ... sorry, I can't help you with this. Maybe you better ask a gif maker who uses Windows.
