"This Article uses PMS to symbolize the "double-edged sword" women and women's health activists face more generally when we ask that women's health issues be taken seriously: we want good scientific research and health system response to the health issues which affect us, but we do not want these issues to be medicalized or used against women." -- ( Read more... )

The dictionary says that it means "to handle or accept as deserving of medical treatment." i.e. women as not being deserving of a certain type of medical treatment. The only thing I can relate that to that definition off the top of my head is how when birth control first came out in the U.S. it was only available to women who were married. Married women were seen as the only women who deserved (or more appropriately were allowed) to be able to both have sex and have more thorough (more thorough than a condom) reproductive control over their bodies.

The one I've heard most is that unmarried women weren't supposed to morally engage in sex. Though I'm sure part of (maybe most of) the justification was STD rates.

In a psychology class a teacher told me once that "ADHD and ADD diagnosis varies by region." I took that to mean that lots of doctor's are a bit trigger happy with the perscription medication.

I think now that children of both genders are diagnosed frequently with ADD or ADHD, but that there's still a perception that boys are more rambunctious than girls.
