Interesting that your review compares the issue to Strength Through Joy while mine was struck by the resemblances to the Cultural Revolution. Let a hundred flowers bloom. :-)
Well my initial comparison was to Soviet art so it's a totalitarian trifecta. But seriously I was getting that vibe from the touching emotional scenes as well as the digging, what with all the equating 'normal' and 'human' with girl-meets-boy or girl-has-babies, mmm babies. It was horribly reminiscent of what Satsu was talking about when possessed by the Swell.
Very interesting review. Like the comparison between Jasmin-land and what's happening in retreat, though the simple life in retreat is portrayed a lot more positive.
It is but there's still a shadow over even the non-cultural revolution like scenes. Buffy and Faith are bonding over a dark pit. Which they've actually just revealed by turning over a stone, actually that's a good visual metaphor for the content of their conversation. Buffy's reduced to thumb sucking in the Xander scene = infantilisation. It's very well done really.
I quite like this interpretation. I wonder if they will go all the way with it, but the cover of #30 were Buffy seems to rediscover her roots (the stake) seems to suggest that.
