BtVS S8.38 "Last Gleaming" Part 3

There’s a James Tiptee story (there’s always a James Tiptree story) called The Man Who Walked Home. It starts in a post-apocalyptic world with a preternaturally barren crater and slowly, as centuries pass and a new civilisation grows up around it, the mystery of the annual disturbances at its centre becomes clearer. Back in S7, Buffy didn't want to be "the one", she shared her power. Maybe now this last temptation will be to destroy what she created (and the seed) and finally get some rest, or a normal life. What if she does another mistake?

I don't think Buffy wants a normal life, I think that stopped around S3 to be honest. She's been given it twice in S8 (in Retreat and in Twilight) and it's proved a poor match both times. I think what she does want is her friends and her family, they made that explict in #35 so my fear is that that's what she's going to lose. The seed will shatter or be shattered and they'll all be split off in the shards. I also thing she's going to kill Angel but this time at the last minute he'll open his eyes (but it still won't be enough). I think there'll be a Xander/Willow showdown and maybe Buffy will have to choose betwen them and Giles will do something terrible and Spike will burn up and Dawn will intervene somehow but not in a key way (because her transmogrification arc concluded with her not wanting to be saved).

Great as always. The idea of having a place where you're meant to be, "home," is important for all the characters and I think you single this out well. I'll add that there's a big division in all the characters between the human/domestic and the magic/powerful. I talked about that in my 37 reviews (shameless self-pimp) and I think that's part of the key of the choices the characters have to make over and over again this season. Xander has Drac and Renee in WatG, Willow has Tara and Aluwyn in the one-off. But it's never as simple as just one binary choice; Renee is more "human" then Dracula but she's still a slayer, Tara was the one Willow could imagine settling down and raising a family with but she was also magical ( ... )
