I'm glad that you wrote this post; I've only made it through the pilot and first episode so far, and kind of stalled out. I planned to continue because Jane Espenson is one of the writers, but the fact that things come together in episode 5 is encouraging, and I might catch up a little faster.

It may be all downhill from here but at least it would be downhill from somewhere. I thought this episode was really effective, definitely worth watching.

I’ve been tempted by Fringe and Olivianess but I fear the bad science will hurt just a little too much and her hair is too distracting, it looks like its permanently underwater.

You could argue that the science is so bad, it's possible to ignore that it's meant to be science, which is how I deal with it. The characters and their relationships are my main reason to watch (apart from the X Files elements, which are so brazen, it's kind of cute).

Very interesting write-up for Caprica. I meant to check it out, but didn't really manage after the pilot. I liked the look and the world very much, but I didn't really care for either the plot or the characters. (And like you, I am weary of naked Ron Moore.)

I get that with bad science, I'm usually OK with it as long as they don't pretend to explain things and they don't write their scientists as magicians. From reading other people's reviews it may be one of those series it's best to skip the non-arc episodes and dive in halfway through. It's not airing on UK TV that I can get but I'm thinking of giving it a try when it does. Caprica, I had a similar problem to you - the few character I liked didn't seem to be central to the interesting plotlines but the connections between all the various stands feel much clearer now.

Well, Walter is pretty literally a Mad Scientist. John Noble finds a lot of differing aspects to that and plays it to the hilt - and if you've seen him as Denethor you know he can be extraordinarily hammy, so depending whether you like that, you're in for torture or a treat. But yeah, I think his expertise is pretty extensive for someone who is a chemist, even at genius level.

Skipping the non-arc episodes has its advantages - not least you'll have a clearer idea whether you'd like it or not - but you might miss out a few relationship aspects, specifically between Walter and his son, Peter, and later on between Walter and his assistant Astrid. Olivia is pretty well-served in general, so you wouldn't miss out on her in the arc episodes.

Caprica: have watched and am more intrigued by the world building, but I still don't like any of the characters beyond Lacey, Tamara and the Zoelon. I hope we'll see more of Sister Clarice's family and more on interplanetary relations beyond Caprica and Tauron.

It's funny given Jane E's reputation as a character lover how unlovable most of the characters still are. I suppose her particular skill was to put the spotlight on minor characters like Jonathan or Kat. I guess establishing a whole new cast is quite a different thing that maybe you actually have to love the leads more than everyone else to write effectively.
