Just stick by me, love, I'll show you around. XD Definitely no need for a car, more trouble than not in fact. Saint-Catherine (E-W) is the more conventional shopping throughfare, Saint-Laurent (N-S) is the more colourful one. Any hotel or bed-and-breakfast (there are some very nice ones) in the general downtown area should allow for freedom of mobility. Book early though - lots of tourists in town for the Jazz Fest.
