The year in music

Dec 27, 2008 23:46

It's not quite the end of the year, but I am not going to have the chance to hear any more new music until i get back to Melbourne, so I might as well write this entry now. I was originally thinking of calling this entry "the best music of 2008", but that would be a terrible misnomer. Often, I discover fantastic albums much later than the year of ( Read more... )

porcupine tree, albums, steven wilson, agalloch, music, opeth, concerts

It's amazing how much a year can change your perspective. I look back at my best of 2007 and laugh at some of the choices. For instance, I ranked In Rainbows at #2. Looking back now, it would still probably make my top 10, but near the end. I also made a few discoveries this year that would've changed my list.

Ha, yeah, I've found the annual lists I maintain on RateYourMusic to be in a constant state of flux. I'm pretty sure my former #3 for 2007 is now only just clinging to the top ten.

I hate to think what my 2004 list at the end of 2004 would've looked like ... thank god I never did one then!

It's times like this where I wish I wasn't completely musically ignorant, and therefore had something intellegent to contribute...lol.

Somehow, I think it's for the best that you are ignorant towards my #3 and #9! And probably #2 as well.

I can't quite imagine you digging black metal or death metal, no matter how progressive or artistic it may be. Heh.

(Though I'm a bit of an unlikely metal fan myself.)

The only thing I even know of these is Fleet Foxes, and I am in agreement.

It's funny, I don't think Your Protector SHOULD be the best song on the album. He Doesn't Know Why has the potential to be far superior, and if it launched into the huge chorus it requires around about 2:00-2:30, it would. But instead it dithers into nothing with typical indie wankery, and I find it to be terribly disappointing. But all in all, Fleet Foxes were a pleasant surprise. I totally expected it to blow, but most of the songs are pretty enjoyable.

Also, once I'm back in Melbourne and have IM again (I'm abstaining from installing it on the new laptop while in Queensland, since it'll be just another thing to distract me from spending time with family I see all too infrequently), you and I need to have a good, long overdue chat! I miss you.

White Winter Hymnal is actually my favorite, but what do I know!

I miss you too, friend. I currently have plenty of time on my hands (far too much, actually) so I'll be spending a lot of the next week online.

4. Fleet Foxes: Your Protector (from Fleet Foxes)

HELL. FREAKING. YES. I absolutely adore that band- my partner introduced me to them earlier in the year, and they are simply magical. They are playing in Wellington in early January- should be just magnificient!

Have you heard their EP, Sun Giant, at all? Simply gorgeous.

Happy New Year, Andre. :)

I honestly expected Fleet Foxes to utterly suck, much like most of the other indie bollocks that's over-hyped (an Arcade Fire-less world would be a better world, for instance). I was quite surprised to find their album is in fact quite a pleasant listen with a number of memorable songs. I haven't yet heard the EP, though I hear it's good.

I wonder if they're also playing in Melbourne ...

And a happy new year to you too!

Indie bollocks

Gosh, we really are like chalk and cheese with music these days, are we not...

9. Opeth: Watershed

5. No-Man: Schoolyard Ghosts

4. Steven Wilson: Insurgentes

Hell yes, hell yes and hell-fucking-yes. Though, uh, if you hadn't introduced me to Porcupine Tree, I would be scratching my head right now, wondering exactly wtf these even were.

Thank you very much for introducing me and changing my musical tastes for the better. :)

Happy (early) New Year and I wish you the best in 2009!

Heh. You should also get that Russian Circles album into you. I'm not exactly in the business of tossing my #1 ranking at any old thing.

And the same to you for 2009!
