Praise the non-existent Lord, for another semester of university is done. Yesterday, I submitted one massive essay and half-arsed my way through an exam, and that's it. Given that I half-arsed my way through the essay component of the course in which I had the exam and somehow emerged with a surprisingly high mark for my insubstantial efforts, I' ( Read more... )

When you're a good writer, I think it's easy to muddle through assignments you don't really care about and still do well on them. That's how I squeaked through many courses in college, especially philosophy courses. I think that's part of how I ended up teaching writing--I learned from experience how much easier university courses are when you start out with good fundamentals. It's really alarming, in the U.S. at least, how few students come to college writing at the level they need to be. First semester students are particularly underprepared, so I know I'll have my hands full in the fall.

Despite being on Interference for several years, I still haven't met anybody. I need to make up for that during the next tour.

Yeah, I've discovered the fact that I have a clue about how to write an argumentative essay has seen me through on essays where my actual argument's substance was sorely lacking. What has left me aghast at Melbourne University is that there is no incentive whatsoever for tutors to actually encourage good academic writing. I was talking to one of my tutors, and he explained that due to the Arts Faculty's requirement that all marking be conducted on a bell curve, it actually added to his workload to emphasise correct essaywriting techniques. He estimated that only about 15-20% of students actually get the writing style right, which is quite enough to fill the department requirements for the amount of students receiving marks in the top bracket. If tutors actually, well, tutored, they would have to bump some people down into the lower brackets and spend more time on the marking ( ... )
