For the last week or so, the Elisabeth Fritzl case has been all over the news, and for good reason - it's an absolutely stunning and horrifying story. I'm sure most of you are familiar with it already, but the gist of it is that Austrian Elisabeth Fritzl was imprisoned in a cellar by her father, Josef, at the age of 18 and held there for 24 years ( Read more... )

Yes, oxygen thief of the highest order. Sadly though, there really are women who are that subservient and who live in a relationship of that D/s dynamic. It's unwise to assume that this woman may have known, or even suspected the 'strange ways' of her husband.

I agree, its definitely suspect but I also know more about human nature than to assume there MUST be a conspiratorial aspect.

My theory is that Josef controlled all the financial aspects of the family, so his wife would have never known how much funds they had, and how much was going where, to notice that something was amiss and they were "missing" a few hundred dollars every month. And if he's dissapearing for hours on end for 24 years, at some point it's not going to seem out of place to the wife, so she wouldn't suspect.

Second, I heard that the adopted children were "found" on their doorstep with a note from the daughter saying she couldn't keep them, and please raise them. Since the previous letter had said she had joined a cult and to please stop looking for her. This was all second hand, mind you. But that's pretty much the only way you'd think the mother would have a reason to stop looking for her. Especially if the daughter mentioned that someone might harm her if they went prying into the cults' business?

That guy should be tortured to death.

Yes, nauseating.

I read a story today saying that he actually forced the daughter to act the part, even calling and lying to the mother to reinforce the cult cover-up story. According to the story, the mother spent quite a bit of time trying to track down the cult.

People do strange things when intimidated. They also have a great capacity to ignore things they don't want to see; I wouldn't underestimate it.
