Evidently, my birthday has come early this year. This is a bit strange; at this time of year, it's meant to be Kate's birthday (well, tomorrow), with mine just over a week away on the 17th. But now was the opportune time for my mother to purchase my birthday present and give it to me, so she did. I am now the very proud owner of a snazzy 320GB ( Read more... )

The problem with doing it either strictly alphabetically or chronologically is that you have pesky things like singles and B-sides to deal with. So what I have done would do is have a folder for the timeframe you want, and then within that folder, have one for the album tracks, one for the singles and B-sides, one for the live tracks, and one for the miscellaneous stuff that can't be neatly categorized (where, for instance, would you put Bono's spoken word poetry?)

If you wanted to be that anal about it, that is.

For most bands, that isn't too much of an issue, but for those where it is, I've already given that some consideration. Singles, EPs, and the like get their own folder, and b-sides/rarities get their own one if I have enough, while if I only have a couple of loose tracks, they go just in the artist's main folder. It works nicely enough except for U2, where things are total mayhem on my internal hard drive. I intend to sort things out when I transfer U2 over to my external hard drive. I want to do this "right". I'm sick of having my musical collection in various stages of organisation.

Heh, that worked fine when I had only a few songs. At this point, even dividing up things into folders for individual artists within the My Music folder is too intensive and I've had to put them in subfolders for artists beginning with A-D, E-H, etc., and now on my external hard drive, I have enough music to just have a folder for A, B, C, etc.

Plus, you know what I'm like. I'd go nuts if this stuff wasn't organised.

There's a very simple way to organize it all alphabetically. Put all your music in one giant music folder, and then tell it to display the folder's contents whatever way you like (Name, Artist, Album, etc.). Not only does that save you a good deal of work, but you can switch between each way of viewing it whenever you like, instead of redoing all your folders. Just go to your music folder, click View --> Arrange Icons By---> whatever way you want them sorted. I'd also check Show in Groups, just because it sorts it nicely into sections automatically.

That is true, and it would be a good suggestion if not for one fact: I have an over-abundance of music, or perhaps simply not enough RAM (I have 512 MB). If I dumped all of my music files into one single folder, I don't even want to think of how long it would take to load. It currently has roughly 350 files and sometimes can take a while to load, especially when I'm viewing the folder through programs such as Nero or AIM. Dividing it up into folders makes the process so much more fluid. Plus, I find things easier to find that way. It means more work, but I think the results are worth it.

Ha, I actually do have a vote on the poll besides "Zooropa," but it was "Zooropa" and I had to choose it. I am sure you understand.

Based on my observations of you and music, I vote chronologically. It seems whenever you say the name of the song you say the year in the same breath. Then again, alphabetically does indeed have it's strong points.

On the other hand, you could just chuck it all into a folder labled "ZOOROPA!" and let whatever happens happen.

I have decided that I have been no help whatsoever. But I liked the poll with "Zooropa!"

Haha, that option is tempting, isn't it? I refrain from putting it on serious polls, but I thought "why not?" for this one.

Hee, yeah, in some ways, I'm very strongly leaning towards chronologically. It works best for bands I know well, e.g. for U2, I think of their albums in order of release rather than alphabetically. For bands I don't know so well, I tend more towards alphabetically as I don't know the chronological order.

Aaaaand here's my Zooropa icon.

I said "chronologically" just because that's how I sort a lot of my music. However, I have no where near the collection you do so either way would work equally as well just so long as you pick one and keep with it... so that's my two cents.

Oh yeah, and forget iPods and such other foolish fads, we have extremely too-large-to-be-healthy hard drives to fill up with nonsensical entertainment! :)

Heee, yes. I have an iPod, which I got for free and have mainly used as extra storage for bootlegs. Now I'm transferring those bootlegs to my hard drive and using the iPod just as portable transport for my very favourite music. My hard drives win out for general storage!

Yes, that's exactly it, I need to pick one and stick to it! On my internal hard drive, I have three systems going. There was my old one, where everything went into the My Music folder except for my U2 collection, which got its own file. Then there's the newer system, where every artist has its own folder, and I'd largely converted to that. Then there's the newest system, which was subfolders for artists with names beginning with A-D, E-H, etc., and I'm about half-done on the conversion to that. It's really irritating to not have everything in the same order, so I want to get things right on my external hard drive from the word go. As it stands, I have enough music to justify a folder for every individual letter of the alphabet.
