That's a Bernese Mountain dog. Trust me, my grandparents used to have them and they're even larger when you're a little kid. And they grab your winnie the pooh bear by the neck and knock out some of the stuffing o.O and the puppies have sharp, arm scarring teeth... I do like them, it's just that my Grandpa didn't train his very well... and they outnumbered me...
Your niece is so cute! :D

yes, and this one is well trained- her sister; my other cousin was viciously mauled as a child, so naturally became a pet trainer- particularly dogs, I wasn't sure how that happened but her logic sorta works. Don't blame the dog, behaviour is learned.

I wasn't sure how it was spelt ^_^'
(my sheltie used to eat barbie doll arms.. only ever up to the elbow, so i have more than a few that are wearing hockey tape casts)

She is adorable! I held her until my arms hurt and had to hold in my squee at the adorability!

essay required for graduation?

Well, I try to make it short.
In the last two grades (12 and 13) you enter a new schooling-system. The classes are divided by "major" and "minor courses". You need to choose two subjects as major course. They count twice as much as minor courses.
During the two years you collect as many credits in tests, oral exams, little tests, etc. If you have enough points you are allowed to take the graduation test, the "Abitur"
After four semesters there is the Abitur in 4 courses: in your two major courses and two minor ones.
AND, you need to do a big essay in one of your major courses. (Well, you are allowed to take your Abitur test when you have at least one credit at the essay.)

For example, my two major courses are German and English, my other Abitur courses are ethics and math. I wrote my big essay in English and the topic was "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".
