Um-hmm. The problem is, you can get to the point where you don't believe anything, which is unproductive.

Primary source or not, who's to say they had a clue what was going on? How many today do? And secondary sources always have an axe to grind, period.

Although Jill has some arithmetic problems she might have a grasp of the situation as a whole. Or she might be out there somewhere. I think I'll stick to fantasy, at least I get to choose what goes into my world.

This is only partially relevant to the above entry...but would you be able/willing to supply me with any resources you know of concerning prostitution in 19th century France? I've been able to locate surprisingly few informative sites on the matter. Do you have any suggestions, book titles or whatnot?

Well... yes... if you don't mind the lack of arithmnetic, this particular book is in fact about prostitution in 19th century France. The author is Jill Harsin, and the title is, I think, "Policing prostitution in 19th century France." Her resources on 1800s-1830s are limited though, she focuses more on 1870s, as far as I can tell from what little I've read of it so far.

Sounds better than some of the ill-informed websites I've been looking at. Thanks. :)
