Who: Sam Witwicky & Ironhide
Where: the Hospital
Summary: Sam forgot something when he went to go visit Mikaela. He runs into Ironhide and the two just... talk.
Notes: Taken place some time after Ratchet is brought to the hospital.

Stasis lock.

He couldn't get the words out of his processor. They kept repeating, a grim sentence, over and over. These transtech medics had said that there was a high chance of recovery... but he couldn't stop thinking about it. Couldn't stop turning the events over and over in his head. Everything... had just been too much. He hadn't been able to keep a close eye on him. Hadn't made him ease off... Just one thing after another...

They'd tried to kick him out, but his cannons had begged to differ, and he was grudgingly allowed to stay. He hadn't said a word, just taken up a position by Ratchet's side, and once things had cleared out... gripped the unresponsive medic's hand like a lifeline.

Movement outside the door. Optics snapped up, the cannon on his free arm charging...

Until he saw the familiar human face.

His shoulders sagged, and he lowered his weapon, letting it power down. "Door is open, boy," he rumbled, tiredly. After a moment, he let go of Ratchet's hand, hoping Sam hadn't seen.

When Sam peeked through the window, he didn't expect to actually see Ratchet there.

He also didn't expect Ironhide to suddenly point the giant cannon at the door with full intent to fire. Sam took a few quick steps backwards, almost tripping over his feet. Seriously, Ironhide? You had to scare the poor boy? At least he didn't see the hand-holding and if he did, he probably wasn't going to bring it up.

When he realized that Ironhide wasn't going to blast the door, Sam slipped inside the room, with a hand on his chest, his heart still racing. One of these days, Sam was going to have a heart attack.

There was silence as Sam looked from Ironhide to Ratchet and back. Finally, he decided to say something, "Is he gonna be okay?"

If he noticed the boy panicking, Ironhide didn't comment on it. Instead, he slumped back in his seat, looking only at neon armor, and apparently ignoring their visitor. It was a long time before he spoke.

"They say so," he said. "Though... they also say Optimus was dangerous." His good optic flicked down to Sam, and then back. "I do not trust their judgment..."

Another long silence. What he wouldn't give to be scolded right now, or berated for some minor scrape. He suddenly didn't care if the boy saw. If the Transtechs were wrong, as he feared... what did it matter? He'd already lost his friend... Exactly as he'd lost his leader. He replaced his hand, though he laid it instead on Ratchet's forearm.

"So you heard," he said. "How much?"

"Yeah but this is different. This is like life-or-death, right? And doctors try to save their patients so--" He wasn't trying to defend the Transtechs. He didn't agree that anyone would call the Autobot leader 'dangerous'.

How did trying to stop a war mean someone was dangerous? What did that make the people trying to to start one? Saints?

But, in a hospital there wasn't a war. Doctors just do what they can to save a person, right?

The silence was starting to get a little bit... awkward. See, this is why eavesdropping is bad. You never know what you'll find out.

"Oh. Uh, not a lot. Really. I just heard a few things from the doctor. That's all." Sam took a few steps closer to Ratchet to get a better look at him. It didn't seem like he was attacked...

"He's not like Optimus right?" He didn't know if there was another Matrix hidden anywhere to use.
