An acquaintance wanted to learn how to make wine because she was considering taking up the hobby, so last night I took her through the steps I use. One of the standard things that they tell patients in therapy is to get out of new relationships. They generally will not tell you to get out of existing ones, especially if you are married, but the American clinic (and this does vary from analyst to analyst) views non-committed relationships as a hindrance to therapy.

Ellie has talked about it a lot in Lacan, and it is something that you will not find happening in France. It is one thing if you want out of the relationship, but analysis is a traumatic experience and having someone there for you outside of therapy can be very important.
