tutorial: tricks and tips for making light textures II

Jun 26, 2005 09:54

yeah, the first actual entry in my shiny new community *g*

and it will be a quick one, too. fun with filters...

these sort of light textures we will make. no stock images. everything is handmade ;)

general notes
  • I used Photoshop 7.0
  • the pics I'm gonna post are smaller than the actual thing I'm working with

step 01: getting started

- make a new canvas, I usually start with 500x500px for these sort of things
- fill it with black
- you have this now (only larger, of course)

step 02: lens flare

- this is the main trick *g*
- use the lens flare filter (filters - render - lens flair)
- I used these settings (Brightness 120% - 50-300mm Zoom)

- the result of this step can look like this, for example

step 03: liquify

- time to get more motion into it
- use the liquify filter (filter - liquify)
- normally I just leave the default settings for brush size and pressure, but you can fiddle around with that
- you don't have to be overly artistic on that. just smear some arms out of the center, don't worry if it looks weird
- the number of arms depends on your taste...

- so you have an octopussy thing now, or maybe only a mishaped Mercedes Benz star. (hey, I'm from Stuttgart everything with three arms is a Daimler logo *g*)

step 04: more layers

- copy the background layer twice.

- on the first copy use a Filter - Distort - Twirl of 50 and set it on Overlay mode,
- on the second copy of -50 and set it on Soft Light mode

step 05: another neat trick

- ok then, at this point it doesn't look exactly bad but not really good neither...
- so we're doing the following: reset your colors to black and white (D) and switch them so that black is the background color (X)
- Use Filter - Sketch - Photocopy on your second layer (the first copy)
- you can play around with the setting, but you want something rather dark...

- and now it looks suddenly much prettier *g*

step 06: coloring

- time for some coloring...
- you can color each layer on its own, to get some spiffy results, but what I've done here is:
- I only changed the second (now black and white) layer with a selective color correction.
- go to Image - Adjustments - Selective Color, chose neutrals and drag the sliders to your liking

and we got this result

and after some cropping this

finished, yippie :)

variations

- use another lense flare (see result: example 2)
- make less arms when liquifying (see result: example 3)
- play around with all the other options *g*
