Summary: Set after the Season 5 finale, AU for Season 6. Dean's not ready to give up on Sam yet, even if it means getting Cas to take him on another trip upstairs. But the story's never simple for a Winchester, and Heaven's not exactly like Dean remembers.
Author's Notes: This story took me over a year to finish, if you can believe it, which explains why it's so out of date for fandom right now. Let's just call it a trip down memory lane! Anyway, I remember watching the last few minutes of the S5 finale, experiencing eye-popping rage at the shit that was going down, and then immediately grabbing some paper and scrawling the plot of this story all over it. The actual writing part came much, much slower. I know as a fandom right now we're all about Cas' issues, but Dean's issues are feeling a little neglected of late, and I think the time is ripe for a comeback.
Technical Notes: I took a few liberties with the mechanics of Heaven as outlined by 5x16, but whatever, we can just blame it on Zachariah. Also, it's been a little while, so I know I've made a mistake with the Latin somewhere, feel free to call me out on it. Lastly, some of the language and imagery from Cas' first memory is borrowed from 1 Enoch and gnostic mythology, because I am just that sort of religious studies dork.
