Avoiding a pantry moth infestation....

I found out that after having pantry moths last year, I have managed to avoid another infestation. Although apparently I didn't freeze my flax seed meal long enough before putting it in a sealed container, because this morning I went to go make some flax seed bread and found this:

my container of flax seed was infested with pantry moth larvae. Gross pic behind the cut )

I have discovered (from the fiber community) that one good freeze isn't enough. What will kill them is a good long (day or two) freeze, then thaw (a couple of days or even a week) then another freeze. What happens is that the bugs are safely in their eggs, and while in eggs can survive the freeze. Then "spring" comes and they start to grow and hatch. This is when the second freeze will get them.

That was lucky.

If you want to be sure you got the pantry moths, Gardens Alive! has a good trap.

(I had better luck with the triangular trap than their flat trap)

I don't even want to know what could lead to an infestation of panty moths.
