Got into Buffalo Friday evening. I wanted chicken wings, so marahsk drove me to Duff's. We had them medium hot. (As the T-shirt says "Medium is hot. Medium hot is very hot.") Got home after 2 AM.
I think seeing an SF convention in their backyard doing it right can only help Ad Astra figure it out, so your idea to start a new con is a good one. Heck of a lot of work, but a good idea. Let me know what I can do to help, when the time comes.
When I get back to Toronto I will begin the feasibility study phase; I'm not even at that point yet. I'll include you in the discussion mailing list once we get that going.
I think part of Ad Astra's strength is the Toronto writing community, you can put some pretty talented people on every lit panel.
That's one of the main reasons I think another SF convention is a good idea. When I look at the talent we didn't use at Ad Astra this year, it seems clear to me we have a big pool of great people to draw on.
The local costumers are also pretty active having three other local cons to stimulate them as well. Cons that do not provide much if any lit content.
As you know, it was costumers who got me into fandom in the first place. I'm actually a little concerned about burning them out. However, my intent is to be costume-friendly; if someone wants to step up to run a masquerade, I'm happy to have one.
Just try not to land on the same weekend as ConClave and I will be happy.
Thanks for the data point. We're going to have two lists of cons: must-not-overlap and prefer-not-to-overlap; I'll put Conclave on the second list.
I understand the concern, and I shared that concern before I got to know people. But I came to the realization that it wasn't a serious concern

wow! so glad I took part of my lunch to read up on LJ. The part I like most about AdAstra of course is the panels. I wish there were more - more focused on writing of course! I'm quite sorry I missed this years AdAstra though - it was always a good get away. The location really didn't matter too much as it was on the TTC line basically. If you wanted to get there it was possible

It is a major Dorsai con and I remember many of the faces from Contradicition the previous litcon in this time slot and area.
Think about your potential out of town audience when planning your date.

Which is exactly what I've ranted about within the committee for years.
maybe one day I'll have some stuff published and have a way to contribute as more than an attendee.
I'll be cheering you on.
