This sounds corny, as I frequently have this exact same problem of getting my mind to settle, but have found this works wonders for me. Crossword puzzles that are moderately difficult (in pen and only your wits to solve the clues).

It's a matter of having something outside of my thoughts to focus and concentrate on, it's a crossword meditation :) If I wake up in the middle of the night with my mind whirring, just a few minutes of this is enough to settle and turn off my mind so I can actually fall asleep.

See, that wake up before you have to and feeling warm, cozy and happy is one of my favorite feelings. I totally know how you feel! :)

Hmmm maybe I passed on some of my sleeping drama to you- although you don't seem to be getting the bad parts out of it! I wanna wake up warm and cozy dammit! Perhaps next time I see you, you could somehow pass some warm coziness on to me- oh the possibilities are endless for such an exchange. ;)

Oooooh, I was about to post something quite similar. How great minds think alike. =)

I'm still on the one-night on, one-night off cycle. Eff that.

My favorite and most effective self-calming technique is to count backwards from 100 in French, one number to each breath in and out. That is, breathe in "cent," breathe out "quatre-vingt dix-neuf," breathe in "quatre-vingt dix-huit," etc. If I have a billion things just racing through my mind, that helps chase them away or reduce them to one or two things, at which point I can better try to fall asleep or accomplish some task.

Wow, I don't know why, but your suggestion really appeals to me. Not for sleeping, but for focus when I'm skating -- I have a hard time breathing properly, and while I was reading your suggestion, it just sort of hit me that this would work really well for helping me breathe while I skate.

Thanks.

I forget where I got the idea. I also to a yoga-like thing where I slowly focus on relaxing every inch of my body, from my scalp, down my neck, through my torso, out to my fingertips, and so on. I haven't meditated in years, but that was a good way to get into a space where I could try to.

a glass of wine and pleasuring yourself will put you to sleep every time.
