Quandary

I've been resisting the notion of e-readers ever since they came out. I'm a tactile person and I love the feel of a book in my hands: the paper, the cover, the turning of the pages. And I've been nodding and smiling when Mr. Bead talks about whether he can hold off temptation on a Nook Color and wait for the second generation of iPads ( Read more... )

I've had a nook for a year now and, actually, got a new color nook for Christmas (totally unexpected! I didn't ask for one but my husband heard me raving about it and surprised me). I haven't used the new one too much yet, so I can only speak the older version.

I adore it. I also like the feel of a real book, but admit that there have been times when I've been reading on the nook and actually reached up to turn the page and realized what I was doing. I've never felt any sort of eyestrain with it, either. Yes, you can put .pdfs on it. The web surfing on the color nook is far better than it is on the original. I haven't perused the magazines on there, but I have got a newspaper subscription. It's not fabulous, but it's functional. I've never tried to move any of the books to my computer or external hard drive so I have no idea how doable it is.

Check out the nook support and comparison pages for more detailed info.

I just got mine, so I can't answer most of your questions. I, like you, had been resisting for a long time. Primarily because I just can't stand to read things in electronic format on my computer. I don't know why the nook is different, but it is. I really, really like it so far and I don't run into any eye strain issues. I did have to decrease my brightness a little from the default but yeah. No problems. You can also store and access pdf files. I've been using mine for surfing the web and reading since I got it replaced (after a screen scratch) on the 26th and haven't had to recharge it yet so battery life=good. As far as durability, there was the scratch issue but I got a clear protective cover on the replacement and haven't had any issues. I really, really like mine. *pets*
