Neat. Was China suffering any effects of the US and UK depression during that same time period??

Oh yes, and in 1936 this overlapped with the mounting anxiety about Japan's invasion of the North China. The onset and the peak of the world depression were offset only by a couple of years: for example, in 1929 the future looked bright, and nothing hampered Shanghai's construction boom.
