I'm so indignant about this - more than any other neighborhood in Shanghai. Where is the outcry? Where are the French voices standing for their heritage? Why am I the only one hurting about Jinling Lu? I'm afraid St. Joseph's Church will be the only landmark left standing in these parts.

To be honest, you are totally right - Messageries Maritimes, long before the original French Consulate, Hotel des Colonies, and now the entire Rue du Consulat, the origins of the French concessions all to be erased. Total indifference? because most people don't know this history and value, certainly not the majority of the general public. For most Jinling Lu was a place to buy music instruments, that sorts of look different and they would place the french concession more west in a sort of leafy avenues hidden houses and many cafes... et voila. Even if the public knew, few would really care, and those who care few would dare. And if so, the small 我 would never stand to the big 我(们). Case in point, the treasure you documented in your books, best one the house of Shen, dongjiadu, or the Chinese parts of the old town... People know and understand the value but nothing stands in the way of profit. Back to Jinling Lu I am also so indignant. What a shame indeed.
Thanks for reporting and helping. For what it's worth.

Agreed. Often the only thing we can do is witness and record. But it has been inspiring and reassuring to discuss it with you, so thank you for this dialog!
