Strange existential moment that only happens to writers: When you are writing an adult character that's your age, and you suddenly realize that he/she has had a much more accomplished life. And then you realize that almost all of your adult characters are the same way.

And then you hate them for it.

Well, but it kinda makes sense. No one wants to read about/see someone who's life is just average. Unless something subsequently extraordinary happens to them. Interesting people either tend to be:
a) extraordinary themselves
b) regular folks in extraordinary circumstances.

It was a sobering thought for me that by the time Alexander the Great was my age, he was dead for four years. Think about that.
