Sweet and Scary
‘You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth.’
Kazu-chan was right.
………..
On January 3, 2005, Tsubasa guest-starred in the variety show, Zubari and asked the famous fortune-teller, Kazu-chan would it be himself or Takki, who would marry first.
It was an unusual question, and Takki was surprised. It was no surprise, however, that like any shrewd fortune-teller worth her salt, Kazu-chan gave no definite answer.
Backstage, Takki asked that question too. He wouldn’t let it rest.
If only he did.
…………..
‘You’re drinking again.’
Takki sighs as he trails a topless Tsubasa strut around his room, sipping cold beer.
‘Why not? They taste best after a bath.’
‘You’ll get drunk again.’
‘Why not? I like getting drunk around you. I get away with things.’
Hosting a drunk Tsubasa is akin to being a lamb in a wolf’s presence. But uneasy as Takki is, there’s no way he’s leaving a friend to repeat the mistake of their senpai, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi. No way is he gonna read in the papers about a tipsy Tsubasa stripping in public and while being hauled away by the police, shouts, ‘What’s wrong with being naked!’
‘Stop playing with your PC and play with me.’
‘I’m not playing. I’m working.’
Tsubasa pouts and saunters to his bag.
‘You’re not the only one with a distraction. I’ve got an iPhone 4!’
Rummaging through the bag, Tsubasa quickly finds his latest toy and triumphantly draws it out.
‘I know,’ Takki answers, unimpressed.
‘I gave that to you, at your birthday party just now.’
Tsubasa smiles. Takki gives the best presents, aside from the kiddy kitchen set, bouncing shoes, etc.
‘I was worried it’ll be pink.’
Stifling his giggles, Takki looks up. He almost got the pink one, though.
‘Maybe you can get me a pink apron next.’
Instantly, the giggling man stills and blushes.
‘Then I can really do those things I said at the concert. Can’t wait to cook for you clad in nothing but a skimpy apron and then…’
‘I get the picture!’ The ball of nerves interrupts abruptly then cowers behind his PC.
‘Speaking of picture, let’s take some.’
Tsubasa refuses to be neglected further.
‘I want our faces in my new phone. And smiley ones too, not one of your death glares.’
Takki frowns. But he obliges. It is a universal rule that birthday boys call the shots.
And this birthday boy knows what he wants and gets what he wants.
‘You kissed me again!’ Takki squeals and touches a spot on his cheek.
‘And we’re both topless too. If this leaks out…’
‘What’s wrong? It’s not like I really kissed you… like this.’
This time, Takki touches his lips silently. Gravely, he turns his back to Tsubasa in protest.
‘When did you change and become so horny?!’
It’s not funny anymore. Tsubasa can’t see the face but he can sense the reproach.
‘When you changed and become so cold.’
The room chills. And time freezes.
Things have indeed changed. Takki knows and hangs his head a little. Immediately, Tsubasa softens.
‘I must still be drunk.’
He walks a little towards Takki’s back and gingerly places his hands on the droopy shoulders.
‘I’m sorry.’
Careful not to embarrass the shy boy further, Tsubasa lets his hands linger but a while.
‘I’m off to bed. Don’t stay up too late.’
Feeling the warmth leave his shoulders, Takki whispers, ‘I’m sorry too.’
…………..
‘You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth.’
‘Try me.’
‘Nooo…!’ Takki almost yells as he jerks up.
The moment of truth still disturbs him, even more so now that their unit's staging a comeback.
‘You okay?’ Tsubasa asks dreamily, barely awake.
‘Hai. Just a silly nightmare.’
Nodding incoherently, Tsubasa props himself up with an elbow then pulls the younger man back into bed. Wrapping his arms sloppily around the rudely awaken boy, he coos, ‘It’s okay. I’m here. Everything’s gonna be alright.’
Takki doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He doesn’t know too whether to push away Tsubasa’s arms or pull up the covers.
But he knows some things don’t change. Tonight, it feels like deva ju - the first night they shared on that double bed, only he was the one embracing Tsubasa then. Nothing else has changed. His shampoo still smells so fragrant on Tsubasa’s hair, his body lotion still feels so smooth on Tsubasa’s skin, his bed that they share still feels so warm, and his body that cushions the sleeping man still feels so soft, so soft that his eyes waters.
Takki pulls up the covers.
Knowing your future can be scary, but it can be very sweet too.

Note: The above story was out before I read about the actual account of Tsubasa's awesome birthday bash. For the real deal, read it
here (English) and
here (Chinese). Takki sure knows how to wow. I think this one ought to outshine his past parties.
Takki was once asked what he would do if his girlfriend's was celebrating her coming-of-age party. He said that he wouldn't make a fuss out of it. If she wanted something special, she would have to do it herself. So I'm surprised at the effort that goes into planning and preparing Tsubasa's birthday. Strange, ne?
