That said, I like how, in the interest of creating complex, human characters, the show gives each of the SSR agents we may all initially have loved to hate a moment to shine -- even if Chief Dooley's was his last.
So Howard Stark invented the bug that got everyone so riled up in 28 Days Later? Nice going, Howard. A fertile imagination, usefully applied ... Yikes. Beginning to think it's a Good Thing he died in that car crash. (And I guess now we know what happened on that Russian battlefield...?)
Yes, dark. And I applaud that. I'm not thrilled to see a good character (warm fuzzies for him or not) go up in smoke, but it keeps me guessing and adds grit to an already entertaining show. Kudos to the writers and directors for proving that nothing is off the table. (Can I admit to sighing with relief when Steve's blood was still there and that the chief's family wasn't harmed by his mind control? 'Cause I held my breath during both scenes...)
And as for Howard -- I'm still a fan. Even a genius needs to work the bugs out his inventions. Who thinks a warped Soviet black ops program is going to get their hands on it? ;)

This. And when Howard invents something, the intended purpose and what he ends up with, there's no way to know till it exists. Some of those things he invented saved the Allies and helped defeat HYDRA/The Nazis in WWII. And one will go on to save Tony in a cave in Afghanistan.
Speaking of Tony, from what I understand Age of Ultron is going to be about, Howard's inventions running a muck seems to be a theme that's going to get carried over.
