Any/Any or Gen, Natasha, autistic spectrum anonymous June 16 2012, 23:39:45 UTC
Natasha's autistic, and outside of those people who have read her medical file, Clint is the only person who knows.

Upon joining the Avengers team, she manages to do a good job of adhering to social norms and most people are willing to dismiss a lot of her behavior as generic Natasha/assassin creepiness. But as time goes on, they start to see Natasha stimming, and how she sometimes listens to the same song for a whole week, and how she sometimes won't stop talking even when it would be the most socially appropriate response and at other times will go nonverbal. And maybe Natasha is embarrassed that she didn't manage to 'act normal' long enough, but Clint is more than willing to help explain to the rest of the team that the first person to suggest that Natasha's autism makes her a liability/less capable/a freak will get an arrow to the knee.

Seconded. I need this fic in my life. It needs to be written yesterday

Thirded. I'd *love* to see how with these sorts of issues Natasha would become a successful assassin.

Aspie here, and Natasha's "I don't see how that's a party" line totally had me thinking along the same lines as this prompt. Actually, I'm not entirely certain I didn't prompt this in my sleep or something.

Which is to say YES YES YES YES YES YES YES PLEASE, SECONDED (providing it's done with respect, preferably by someone on the spectrum themselves or at least familiar with it, because allistic ableism triggers me liek woah). Because there should always be more fic with neurodivergent characters, especially female neurodivergent characters. And Clint being awesome. There should always be more of that too.

Unless I wrote this comment in my sleep, I am pretty sure that you did not! Although that line did make me think of this as well, and a resounding YES to the need to avoid any ableist shit (and I would prefer that any filler be familiar with the autistic spectrum/be on it themselves, too, if only because a lot of ideas surrounding neurodivergent people are really toxic and harmful. And I am more than happy to read a fill in which Natasha comes up against those toxic ideas, but I don't want to read anything which suggests that the ideas are true, if that makes sense?).

ayrt

That makes complete sense, and I can only add an emphatic THIS. Natasha (and Clint) deconstructing toxic ableist shit would be amazing. Having seen some badly done neurodivergent!character fics (in other fandoms), this whole thread is making me so happy. *aspie fistbump, or something*

::returns that fistbump proudly::

I know exactly what you mean about the bad fic, anon! And actually, it just occurred to me how the 'arrow to the knee' could be interpreted - I would love to see him being her friend, but I really need to see her being his friend right back. By that I mean, a lot of the time we see a friendship between a neurodivergent character and a NT character, the NT will "take care of" the neurodivergent person, and it won't read like a friendship between equals at all. So, if any potential filler could please not do that, I would love that very much, thank you.

(Oh, and I just realized I cannot think of a single neurodivergent character who is shown to be in a romantic and/or sexual relationship, apart from Community's Abed where his relationships aren't really shown on-screen, so if any fill did decide to have Natasha in a relationship, that filler might just become my favorite person.)

ayrt, again

Co-signed, absolutely. It's got to be a friendship from both directions. Although I would like to add one million bonus points for the inclusion of the line "I used to be ableist, but then I took an arrow to the knee". Because yes.

Do you have any preferences pairing-wise for Natasha? I make no promises at all (because most likely if I do try to write this it'll just turn into LET ME RANT ABOUT NEURODIVERSITY ISSUES instead of actual fic), but I want this so much that I might possibly end up taking a stab at this myself. Or else I'll beg my best friend (who is allistic but not NT, and also an excellent writer and generally awesome) to write it while I sort of shout pointers at her. Um, ANYWAY, point being: Hypothetically, how would you feel about Clint/Natasha for this? Or would you prefer a platonic friendship between them, and Natasha with someone else? Because I'd be intrigued by either option ( ... )

Oooh, Natasha/Pepper. Do want. Yeah, it might take me a while, but I shall see if I can get my brain to co-operate enough to write this/badger my friend into writing it! (That said, still hoping someone else would like to take a stab at it in the meantime, since I'm not exactly making a claim here ( ... )

Would you mind please taking this discussion to the discussion post? It's been really interesting and civil, but it's more of a conversation/discussion than a prompt.

Oh my god YES. Oh fandom what wouldn't I do to see this done well. Especially if the filler is aware of and uses some of the horrible little predjuces those of us on the spectrum come up against.

Did you want Natasha to not have her high-level abilities to read people/faces/interactions? She has very high interpersonal and manipulative skills, and adapts as a spy to any required social situation.

Would autistic Natasha have done less undercover spy work, then, and more straight assassinations? If she lacks those abilities to always read people?

I would be really happy to read a fill which is an AU in which she has a slightly different skillset (and is still awesome) and has specialized in assassination and/or some other type of spywork.

I would add, however, that a lot of people on the spectrum are taught how to fake being allistic. For example, some types of stimming will be discouraged, eye-contact might be forced, we might be expected to learn and reproduce set responses for conversations (both verbal, and facial expressions/body language), and the body language of a lot of NT people, when it's a majority response (eg nail-biting = nervousness), can be memorized as well. Furthermore, Natasha's skills in the MCU are also about being misread by other people, not just about reading them (see: most of Iron Man 2, the interrogation scene with Loki, the warehouse scene). This means that if you'd like to write a fill in which Natasha's ability to adapt to social situations is partly due to learning responses and partly due to the fact that, as is canon, Natasha tends to be ( ... )
