Title: From the One Side
Author: c3childs
Word Count: 230
Genre: gen
Character: Mai
Summary: She liked to play with knives and stare outside.

Mai liked to play with knives and stare outside (although 'like' might be too strong a word). Perhaps it would be better to say that Mai had developed the habit of playing with knives (though that she definitely liked) and staring outside. Her mother talked of conquering the social world while her father schemed to take over the political and Tom-Tom tried to eat his foot. Nothing of interest to see there so logic suggested that there must be something out there (please).

When she saw a bird in the sky, she never wondered what it would be like to fly, only if she could hit it. A handsome stranger never inspired wild fantasies of secret romance, only reminded her of another. The rain caused no great introspection of how the water washed the world new and clean but made her grateful for a roof. Watching lightning split the sky made her gut twist with memories of her childhood.

Mai liked to stare outside because windows were gateways of opportunity. They were an escape to her past. They separated her dull life from something else (which was probably just as dull but the grass is greener...) that she couldn’t quite reach.

Her hand shot out and metal flashed in the sunlight. A bird fell from the sky with a light thud.

Then again, a window could just be a window.
