Summary: His time was far gone from change.
There was something Piando observed in Sokka throughout their mismatched meetings.
When they first met, the boy was goofy, but humble. It was a refreshing amount of creativity and innovation as his previous student was a technical genius, following tradition to the letter only for appearances’ sake. But this boy had genuine respect and love for the sword, something Piando had not seen in many years.
They met again when the war ended. A brief reunion, but one that granted Piando with a glimpse of the boys greatness. The hardships had not dissolved his spirit and even after there was joy and excitement about the new, the next.
It would be years before their paths crossed a gain. They sparred that time. The boy was becoming a man and his skills improving steadily. Piando would sit and listen to his plans for inventions and improvements he wanted to make.
A sadder meeting was to come. They kneeled together, the boy’s wife on his other side, at the funeral. The old masters were slowly dying and returing to the elements they controlled. The student kept glancing at his master to make sure he was still by his side.
The boy returned once, on his way to the newly constructed city. He was flushed, excited and showing the portraits he drew of his children. Each brush stroke was precise and with purpose, a lesson Piando had taught long ago. But the boy had to leave. He wanted to carve out peace for his children in the city he helped the Avatar and Fire Lord design.
The boy returned again, though Piando could now call him a man. Their spar was brief as Piando was tired and nearing the end. He too would be ash not long from now. But, even within the changing of the world, he saw his lessons and the ways of old within his student.
They sat together for this brief meeting, bowing to one another across the small table, man to man.
Master to master.
“Pai Sho is a very difficult game to master, Sokka.” Piando held up the White Lotus tile. “But I feel the While Lotus Gambit is a strategy that I’m ready to part with.”
