Rich Kid, Poor Kid

Feb 06, 2007 15:43

Being as I'm in a stable long-term relationship with someone who wants to have babies someday, I have to consider having babies someday in my gameplans. I wonder if I'll be one of those horrible insane parents, and what variety I'll be. I think I can probably hold it together well enough not to beat my kids with wire hangers, but I can see the ( Read more... )

I wonder if the children of the rich and indifferent have it best... play all they want because they don't have to worry about supporting themselves as adults.

Of course, instead of "kill the small animal with scrap lumber", it will be "flatten the ocelot with the Bentley".

I bet they aren't much fun to talk to as adults, though...

Yeah, the idea of being a rich parent makes me uneasy as well...I don't want my kids falling in with bad apples like the Hiltons!

Ha! I think he actually got that from some article in Harper's.

I read half of Rich Dad, Poor Dad. It turns out that poor Dads teach you to work hard and get an education and stay at a secure job and buy a home for equity. And here I thought they just ran off and didn't pay child support.

I guess I was raised "middle class" (even though our family barely fit the description), i.e. protected from the world so I had no clue what was out there waiting, and expected to work really, really hard so I could someday make more money than my parents. My parents both grew up poor, so we got kicked out to play most of the time, too. They're also both very religious, so we were expected to only participate in games that Jesus would approve of. Guilt was used to keep us in line... a LOT.

I'm hoping to raise my kids (assuming there will be kids) with both a focus on becoming successful adults, as well as time to be creative. I think a lot of rich parents provide so much structure for their children that the creative part of the kids' brains never develops.

Yeah, I see a lot of rich over-achiever parents being really academically obsessed...like success as a parent equals getting your kids into a good college, so they've got tutors and SAT coaches and college essay editors and so forth.

I don't even know if I want my kids to go to college. I guess I'd ideally like to ply them with enough skills and experiences and critical-thinking training that they can figure out what they want to do with their lives and go do it without having to waste tens of thousands of my dollars on four years of marjuana parties.
