I hate plagiarism. It's just wrong to steal ideas and make them your own. I feel that way especially when it comes to science but since yesterday I know for a fact that these things happens in fanfictions as well. (Duh, yes I know they exist but yesterday I saw for the first time a real plagiarism) It wasn't just the stealing of an idea which

I'd bet that Katyd wrote her ff first. There was a BG yahoo group that used to post challenges, which is why you see the same type of fics (greencard, say) popping up all at once.

I just looked it up and it says Katyd posted her fic on Oct 27, 2004

I think that people sometimes unintentionally plagiarize. Also, sometimes very popular, good ff writers have turned out to be thieves. It's happened in Buffy fandom before and it's always sad to see.

I don't have problems at all with people having the same basic concept, like Buffy has to marry Giles to get him to stay in the US.
Unintentional plagiarism happens, which is sad but human.
Thanks for the information about the time "Wedding Belles" was posted. So Ivana wrote her Niles/CC fanfic 3 years before Katyd and for me this whole thing screams "intentional plagiarism".
I'm new to the fandom and don't want to cause ill-feeling but well that's how I see the case.

Hmm. Just found some links that date the katyd story back to 2001. These are archive sites, which implies the fic is possibly even older.

It's very possible katyd stole, but I'd hate to assume without knowing all the facts first. Sometimes people write under different names for different fandoms. Is it possible your author and katyd are the same person? Let's see if we can find out. :)
