WSJ recommends investing in food

I don't want to alarm anybody, but maybe it's time for Americans to start stockpiling food. )

food politics, i'm not paranoid

so, out of curiosity - what kinds of food is he planning to hoard? i am frankly at a loss: we don't eat very much rice (due to carbohydrates considerations); most other grains go rancid relatively quickly; eggs are impossible and milk is difficult to store in meaningful quantities; i have a suspicion (though i have not crunched the numbers) that with energy prices being what they are, investing in a large freezer chest for vegetables and meat is not going to be cost-effective; i don't think we actually eat anything that comes in a box or a bag...

That is exactly what I was thinking about the article. Unless you plan to store an awful lot of processed foods, cereal, white rice, and canned goods, there's not too much you can keep around for long enough that it would make sense, from a cost standpoint. How much food could you store in a regular sized kitchen in a regular sized home? A month's worth? Six months worth? Where will you put it all?

I'm a bit skeptical of the idea that stockpiling food will allow any for major savings in the long-term, at least for my family and the kinds of foods we eat.

so, i've thought of one category of food that's delicious and nutritious and keeps very well - legumes. i guess i could store peas, lentils, beans and chickpeas in some kind of big plastic tubs in the basement. i don't know if the price of beans is rising fast enough to make that make sense, though :)

wal mart and costco were either considering or already implementing similar moves.
